Everton are looking at the free-agent market following their frustrating end to the summer transfer window, David Moyes has confirmed.
The manager was speaking for the first time since Deadline Day, when Everton sold Beto but failed to complete a deal for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun.
Moyes admitted he was disappointed Everton had not managed to complete more business, although he stressed that he did not believe the outcome was anybody’s fault.
More significantly, he confirmed the club are now looking at players who remain available outside the transfer window.
Everton stance appears to have changed
That represents a notable shift from the picture only 24 hours ago.
Reports had suggested Everton were prepared to wait until January rather than sign a free agent simply to increase the numbers in Moyes’s squad.
That now appears less certain.
Moyes said Everton were concentrating on the players already at the club, but acknowledged that the free-agent market was being considered.
The timing is particularly interesting.
Jamie Vardy has been linked with Everton today, while former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has reportedly been offered to the club.
As we explored earlier, there are several other unattached strikers available should Everton decide they need immediate cover for Thierno Barry.
Moyes gave no indication that a signing was imminent and did not name any potential targets.
But after Everton emerged from Deadline Day with Barry as their only recognised senior centre-forward, the door to another addition is clearly not closed.
