Moises Caicedo injury update: Xabi Alonso sets Chelsea deadline for Arsenal

Chelsea will make a final decision on Moises Caicedo’s fitness on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

The midfielder remains a doubt after lasting just 13 minutes on his return against Brighton, with Xabi Alonso confirming Chelsea will assess him one final time before selecting the squad for the Emirates.

Chelsea officially confirmed Alonso’s latest Caicedo update on Friday.

Chelsea delay Moises Caicedo decision

Caicedo missed Chelsea’s opening Premier League victory over Fulham and the Carabao Cup win against Luton following an injury setback.

He returned to the squad against Brighton last weekend and was introduced during the second half.

However, ReadChelsea reported that Caicedo lasted only 14 minutes before being forced off again.

Alonso said after that game the issue was not new and Chelsea would assess the midfielder during the week.

There is still no definitive answer.

Speaking ahead of the Arsenal trip, Alonso confirmed Chelsea will wait until Saturday before deciding whether Caicedo can be involved.

He said: “Tomorrow we will make the final decision.”

That leaves Chelsea facing an anxious wait over one of their most important players.

Arsenal test increases Caicedo importance

Caicedo’s availability would be significant in any game.

Against Arsenal, it carries even more weight.

Chelsea have just sanctioned Enzo Fernandez’s £125m move to Manchester City and failed to secure a direct midfield replacement before the transfer deadline.

ReadChelsea has already analysed why Chelsea’s £125m decision faces an immediate test at the Emirates.

Caicedo would ordinarily be central to Alonso’s attempts to control Arsenal’s midfield, win second balls and defend transitions.

Without him, the Chelsea head coach would again need to reshuffle.

Romeo Lavia has started the season strongly, while Reece James and Valentin Barco provide alternative solutions in central areas.

But Caicedo remains one of the few players in the squad capable of offering Chelsea the same level of defensive control and ball-winning ability.

That makes Saturday’s final fitness check one of the biggest decisions Alonso will make before kick-off.

Chelsea’s full Arsenal match guide will also need updating once Caicedo’s status is confirmed.
