Former Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe, who ripped a braid from his ex-girlfriend's hair during a confrontation, has avoided jail after telling a court he was "genuinely remorseful".
Ibe, 30, played 58 matches for the Anfield club before moving to Derby County, Birmingham City and AFC Bournemouth. He attacked his former partner Amie Mayson outside her residence in Lambeth, south London, on December 14.
The incident occurred after she challenged him and insisted he return money she claimed he owed her, Croydon Magistrates' Court heard on Friday. Prosecutor Aya Alshekhili stated that following Ms Mayson's request for reimbursement, Ibe responded: "No, I'm going to be a pr---."
Ibe was carrying a bag containing drinks, snacks and flowers, but when she referred to him as a "druggy" he seized her arm "hard" before grabbing her hair, the court was told. The footballer tore a braid from Ms Mayson's head, the court heard.
On Friday, magistrate Brij Kalia handed Ibe a 12-month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work and 27 days of rehabilitation activity. Ibe also received a fine of just over $1000, reports the Liverpool Echo.
The footballer, who represented himself at the hearing dressed in a black coat and black trousers, informed the court: "I made a serious mistake.
"I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful. I've had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next."
Ms Alshekhili told the court that the attack had left Ms Mayson's confidence, self-esteem and self-worth "on the floor".
In a victim impact statement read aloud to the court, Ms Mayson said: "I want the court to understand the impact that this incident has had. The assault has had a significant impact on me both physically and mentally."

Despite harbouring lingering "feelings of fear", she expressed "compassion" towards Ibe, noting that forgiveness had become an integral part of her "healing journey".
Ibe, of Chislehurst, south-east London, pleaded guilty to the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in July, after denying it in March.
On Friday, Ms Alshekhili revealed that prior to the assault, the pair had been engaged in an "on and off" relationship since late 2024.
The former England under-21 international turned out for Lokomotiv Sofia in the Bulgarian First League until June.
Over the preceding two years, he had been featuring in non-league football before securing a move to the Bulgarian capital in November 2025.
