The 28-year-old subsequently spent 18 months on loan with Aston Villa and Barcelona before returning to Manchester.
Rashford had expected Barcelona to make his move permanent, but the La Liga champions stunned him by opting to sign Anthony Gordon instead.
The forward produced an encouraging display against Ipswich and now has a strong chance of retaining his place in the starting XI this weekend.
Carrick will be hoping his former teammate can strike again against his favourite opponent, give United another flying start and help secure a statement victory on Merseyside.
