Manchester City and Enzo Maresca did not feel the need to recruit a like-for-like replacement for Nico Gonzalez upon his move to Newcastle United, according to recent reports.

Gonzalez was one of several midfielders to leave City this summer when he signed for Newcastle United in August, with Rodri joining Barcelona, Tijjani Reijnders moving to Al Qadsiah and Bernardo Silva leaving for Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Maresca also bid farewell to Omar Marmoush and Savinho in attack, the pair of whom joined Tottenham on a season-long loan and permanent basis respectively.
City brought in Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea, Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille to reach nearly £400 million spent on those players alone, including add-ons.

O’Reilly’s talent adequate to fill gap left by Gonzalez's departure to Newcastle United
Although the club tried to adhere to a ‘one-in, one-out’ strategy throughout the summer window, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee, the club felt O’Reilly would be a suitable option in midfield, especially due to them being well-stocked at left-back with Josko Gvardiol and Rayan Ait Nouri.
This early into his tenure, Maresca has been known to trial and test new methods to overcome his opponents from a positional standpoint, and to put a heavy focus on his players’ ability to transition smoothly.
As a result of that priority, he has started Marc Guehi in defensive midfield and O’Reilly in attacking midfield in his opening two Premier League games as the City manager, which brought doubts ahead of kick-off but, in the end, success.

O’Reilly joined City at the age of eight after being spotted by scouts in Moston, Manchester, two years earlier and played in attacking midfield until Pep Guardiola reshaped him into a left-back.
Now, however, it looks as though the England international will stay higher up the pitch, with Maresca preferring Gvardiol at left-back role owing to the contrast in the duo's profiles.
Left-back depth still not an issue despite concerns over Ait-Nouri’s future
Maresca’s act of moving O’Reilly further up the pitch provides his midfield options with more protection, competition and talent, but there will understandably be concerns over the depth, or lack of it, that the City manager has at left-back.

It’s quite clear that Gvardiol is certainly the Italian’s first-choice left-back following a successful pre-season and start to the competitive 2026/27 campaign, while Ait-Nouri continues to struggle for minutes after Manchester United failed to complete a loan move for the former Wolves star on deadline day.
Of course, that only leaves Maresca with two options at left-back, but it is important to note now that, with the world-class additions of Fernandez, Anderson and Bouaddi, it could prove a challenge for O’Reilly to gain consistent minutes in midfield.
O’Reilly’s greatest strength is his versatility, and while he may be used in midfield more often than anywhere else on the pitch, he will be of equal importance on the left side of defence if he is ever required.
