Fabrizio Romano reveals financial implications of Arsenal recalling Nwaneri from Dortmund

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed the financial implications should Arsenal decide to exercise the recall option included in the loan deal that saw Ethan Nwaneri move to Borussia Dortmund.

Nwaneri secured the loan move to the Signal Iduna Park before the end of the summer window in a bid to secure consistent playing time following a tough 2025/2026 campaign.

The teenage midfielder struggled to feature consistently for the Gunners during the first phase of last season and also endured an unsuccessful loan spell with Olympique Marseille in France.

Despite the difficult campaign, Nwaneri secured a loan move to the Bundesliga giants, with the Premier League champions retaining a recall clause in the agreement.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained the details of the agreement between both clubs and the financial implications should Arsenal decide to bring the midfielder back.

"My understanding is that it is a straight loan, no buy option or obligation clause," Romano explained.

"Borussia Dortmund have conceded to Arsenal, it was a crucial condition without that condition the deal wasn't going to happen.

"Borussia Dortmund accepted to include in the deal from Arsenal a specific recall clause. They paid a loan fee and the salary of the player.

"But if Arsenal activate the recall clause of Ethan Nwaneri and it is not in the January transfer window, in terms of timing of the clause, they would concede Borussia Dortmund some time to find a replacement.

"But apart from the timing, in terms of money, if Arsenal trigger the recall clause of Ethan Nwaneri, Borussia Dortmund get their money back from the loan fee, they will only cover the salary. So, this is how it works the special clause into the contract of Ethan Nwaneri"

Dortmund opted to sign Nwaneri as a replacement for Giannis Konstantelias, who suffered an ACL injury just a few weeks after joining the German club..

The move provides Nwaneri with an opportunity to secure regular playing time and regain his confidence after a challenging campaign.

The Super Eagles-eligible midfielder will now hope to justify the decision to move to Germany and deliver positive performances as he looks to rediscover his best form in the Bundesliga.
