When FC Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for €80 million, some questioned whether the price was too high. However, as the season has started and after a strong FIFA World Cup, Gordon is looking like he’s worth every cent.
It’s still early, but he’s quickly become a fan favorite. His name has already been chanted at the Camp Nou, and fans have already brought signs with his name on it. “Antoni Gros és català,” one flag read in Catalan. That is: Anthony Gordon, or a version of his name in Catalan, is Catalan.
The craziest thing about all this is that Gordon has only played two matches for Barça, and he has yet to score. However, he’s made his mark through dribbling and passing. In particular, he has given up chances to score his maiden goal in order to set up teammates, a gesture that shows a clear selflessness. He has three assists so far.
Reports say he’s popular in the dressing room, too, despite the language barrier. That humbleness and professionalism he’s shown on the pitch has carried over to the locker room.
There will surely be challenges ahead, but the start to life at Camp Nou has been sensational for the Englishman.
