Chelsea have enjoyed a positive start to the 2026/27 Premier League season. With two wins from two games, how far can Xabi Alonso’s Blues go?
Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin would advise people to exercise caution with their expectations around Chelsea at the moment. He thinks it is ‘too early’ to say, pointing towards their failings last season to supplement his argument.
Furthermore, he also thinks that Arsenal will win the Premier League this season, stating that the Gunners are ‘so far ahead’ over every other club in the division right now.
Nevin believes that Arsenal deserved to win the league title last season and thinks they’re ‘much better’ this season. As such, he thinks Chelsea will need more time to build before they can mount a serious title challenge.
Nevin played for Chelsea over the course of five years, from 1983 to 1988. During this time, he played in 193 league games and scored 36 goals along the way.
Can Chelsea win the Premier League title this season?
Speaking with Betarades, Nevin said: “It’s too early to say Chelsea can compete with that, it’s too early. It really is too early to say that. Last season was also unfair on Chelsea. I said Chelsea are going to fold at some point. They are, they will fold. They didn’t get enough of a break.
“They won the World Club championship. They’re going to fold. It just happens. They’re human, and it doesn’t matter what you pay somebody.
“They could pay you and me £100,000 a week, you still can’t run a four-minute mile, can you? They’re human, and they were always going to bust, and it did bust at the end of last season.”
Who does Pat Nevin think will win the Premier League this season?
“I have to be brutally honest. I think Arsenal are so far ahead of everybody. They’re just so far ahead. There’s no thought of them being in any sort of transitional period. They’ve gone beyond that.
“They’re just adding and they’re adding. I can remember Liverpool used to do this years ago. You know, they’d get a really good team and then they just add and add and add, and then when the players were aging, they would just get the next best player in. And Arsenal, it’s taken them a while, but then it should take you a while.
“In the modern footballing world, we want everything yesterday. You can’t always do that, and sometimes you have to plan and you have to organise and you have to structure, and they’ve done it. It’s taken them a while, but they’ve done it absolutely brilliantly.
“No one’s close. I think they won last season correctly and rightly so, and they’re much better this season. You’ve got Declan fit again, looking great. Saka looks wow again. They have two ‘new’ players there. You’ve got Kai Havertz, who wasn’t fit for half a season, and that’s before you talk about the new players that have come in.”
