Timber decision could change Arsenal’s Chelsea defence
Saturday’s training session suddenly matters.
Timber has returned to first-team training after missing the start of the campaign and Arteta says the defender is in “really good condition”.
Arsenal’s official injury update confirms a final decision on his availability against Chelsea will be made after Saturday’s session.
That could significantly alter Arteta’s defensive plans.
William Saliba remains unavailable and Cristhian Mosquera required treatment during the victory over Aston Villa, although Arteta has described that issue as largely precautionary.
Ezri Konsa is therefore pushing for his first Arsenal start.

Throw Timber back into the equation and Arteta suddenly has another major option at both centre-back and right-back.
Whether the Chelsea game comes slightly too soon remains today’s first big question.
Bruno Guimarães expected back in training
There is encouraging news in midfield too.
Bruno Guimarães picked up a knock after coming on at Villa Park and subsequently missed Thursday’s open training session.
Arteta expects him to train on Saturday.
That does not guarantee a start against Chelsea, but it should give Arsenal another powerful midfield option from the bench at minimum if he comes through the session successfully.
Arteta has considerable depth in that area.
Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Ødegaard and Martín Zubimendi are all available, while Bruno made an encouraging contribution at Villa.
The bigger question is whether Arsenal need his physicality against a Chelsea side packed with runners between the lines.
Arteta warns Arsenal about Chelsea’s explosive starts
Chelsea’s defensive record should encourage Arsenal.
Their attacking numbers should not.
Xabi Alonso’s side have scored seven goals in their opening two Premier League games, but have also conceded five.
Arsenal have taken the opposite route, winning twice without conceding.
Arteta has specifically highlighted Chelsea’s ability to start matches aggressively and score early, making control one of his priorities on Sunday.
That creates an intriguing contrast.
Arsenal have allowed only one shot on target through their opening two league matches.
Chelsea have been far more chaotic.
Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Morgan Rogers give Alonso enormous attacking quality, while Arsenal will be attempting to extend a remarkable recent record against their London rivals.
Chelsea head to the Emirates still looking for their first win over Arsenal in 12 meetings.
They may represent Arsenal’s first major test of the title defence anyway.

Eze or Tzolis is Arteta’s biggest attacking call
One position remains particularly difficult to predict.
Christos Tzolis started both of Arsenal’s opening Premier League games, but Eberechi Eze transformed the left side after replacing him at half-time against Aston Villa.
Eze subsequently played a role in the move which produced Bukayo Saka’s winner.
That has increased pressure on Arteta to change his starting XI.

That call now feels considerably tighter.
Arteta must decide whether to reward the £34m summer signing with another opportunity or use Eze’s creativity from the beginning against Chelsea.

There is no longer an established first-choice left winger waiting to reclaim the position.
Someone has to make it theirs.
Rogers arrives after Arsenal’s £80m decision
One player Arsenal will not have on their left is Morgan Rogers.
Fresh reporting this week revealed Arsenal had roughly £80m in mind for the former Aston Villa attacker before refusing to meet Villa’s valuation.
Chelsea eventually paid £117m.
Rogers has responded by becoming involved in four of their opening seven league goals.

Arsenal Women begin their WSL title challenge
Sunday is not solely about the men’s team.
Arsenal Women begin their WSL season away to Brighton at 12pm, several hours before Arteta’s side face Chelsea.
Renée Slegers has made no attempt to hide Arsenal’s ambition.
Following a huge summer rebuild, the manager has made winning the WSL title the target.
