Chelsea chiefs could be set to step in and make Xabi Alonso’s mind up for him when it comes to Moises Caicedo’s availability for their upcoming game against Arsenal.
Caicedo is yet to start for the Blues this season, and his only appearance off the bench against Brighton ended with him being subbed off again due to another injury concern.
A lot of conversation around midfielders at Chelsea has revolved around who will partner the Ecuador international in the long run, following the exit of Enzo Fernandez.

Moises Caicedo injury update as Chelsea chiefs have their say
However, Simon Phillips has stated that Caicedo may only make the bench against Arsenal, while some at the club want him to be fully rested until after the September international break.
He said: “SPTC Sources understand Moises Caicedo remains a major doubt for tomorrow and the best we could see is a place on the bench. However, Caicedo’s injury is reoccurring, and risking him even off the bench could cause further issues.
“There are some at the club who want to see a full 2-3 week rest for Caicedo and bring him back in after the international break. Chelsea likely to start with Reece James and Romeo Lavia in midfield tomorrow.”
Chelsea have already seen the negatives that can come from rushing players back before they are ready to compete again. Both Reece James and Romeo Lavia have been victims of recurring injuries.

It is likely to be this very duo who will start for the Blues at the Emirates on Sunday, as Chelsea face their biggest test of the season against the defending champions.
James in particular will be heavily relied upon after he stepped up at Stamford Bridge in this fixture last season after Caicedo was sent off.
After not signing a new midfielder to replace Fernandez, Chelsea need Caicedo fit and available throughout the season, and if it means he is unavailable in the short-term, this is unfortunately how it is going to have to be.
