Tyrone Tracy made the New York Giants 53-man roster, but he might not stay on the team much longer. A former fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Purdue product began his career on a relatively high note. Appearing in all 17 games while making 12 starts, the rookie finished his inaugural campaign with 839 yards and five touchdowns on 192 attempts, good for 4.4 yards per carry. While nobody called him a superstar, he looked like a starting-caliber running back.
However, he fell behind rookie Cam Skattebo in 2025. While he still finished the season with 740 rushing yards, most of that production came after Skattebo suffered his season-ending injury. The Arizona State product is back and set to lead this backfield, while multiple reports indicated Tyrone Tracy was on the roster bubble throughout the offseason. While he ultimately made the roster, first-year head coach John Harbaugh might only be keeping him so he can trade him, and the Detroit Lions need another running back.

Giants Could Trade Tyrone Tracy to Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have one of the best running backs in the NFL in Jahmyr Gibbs. However, the rest of the depth chart leaves a lot to be desired. The Lions traded David Montgomery in the offseason and brought in veteran free agent Isiah Pacheco to serve as the team’s backup. However, the former Chief is currently on the injured reserve, which means that Sione Vaki and Jacob Saylors will be responsible for handling the backfield when Gibbs needs a breather. Neither one of these players has any notable experience, so the Lions could use someone like Tyrone Tracy.
Gibbs is fantastic, but no running back can handle 100% of the carries in a backfield. The New York Giants have Skattebo and veteran free agent Najee Harris, so they should be willing to trade Tyrone Tracy for a late-round pick. Tracy may not be a superstar, but he’s a proven option who could have a strong season behind Detroit’s above-average offensive line.
