Aaron Rodgers is very particular in what he expects from his receivers. His words to the media offer a glimpse at how he’s feeling about the receiving corps, and whether a young receiver is coming along as he expects them too.
That’s why his comments about Germie Bernard and Roman Wilson were notable earlier this week. Speaking to the media, Rodgers mentioned something he liked about Bernard, saying he doesn’t make “repeat mistakes.”
Moments later, that phrase was brought up once again, with Rodgers mentioning that Roman Wilson has repeated mistakes.
Greg Jennings, a receiver who played with Rodgers for several years in Green Bay, did not like those comments.
“I’ve never liked this. He’s not doing this to DK. He’s not doing this to Davante Adams. You don’t take something that we can resolve, and I get it, he talked glowingly about Roman… But Roman is listening to that, and immediately, when you hear ‘that’s the second time,’ it’s like a reprimand of like, we didn’t even need to know about the first time,” Jennings said on FS1’s First Things First. “This has been the issue that I’ve always had… When we look at you [Rodgers], it’s like, do you ever do anything wrong?”
As Jennings mentioned, Rodgers did have some good things to say about Wilson. Just after his comment about the repeat mistake, he made a point to say Wilson had a “fantastic camp” and reaffirmed his confidence in the young receiver.
Yet, given the history between these two, it’s hard not to notice that comment. Aaron Rodgers and Roman Wilson connected on a couple of nice passes last year, but Wilson faded into obscurity. As the year went on, the Steelers brought in veteran receivers instead.
Jennings does have a point. While Rodgers seemed to mean well with his comment, there isn’t any good that can come from mentioning it in front of the media. That results in the story getting blown up, which only adds more pressure on the shoulders of a young receiver who may be playing for the sake of his career in 2026.
Rodgers was maybe trying to motivate Wilson, but there’s an argument that the former should have kept things in-house regardless.
But aside from this, it does seem like Rodgers and Wilson are on the same page, at least more than last year. Rodgers hasn’t been shy to sing Wilson’s praises throughout camp, and that did continue into this week.
Wilson had a quiet preseason, but most of his work in camp came with Rodgers throwing him the ball. He’ll look to roll the momentum the two have built together into the regular season.
However, Bernard is in the rearview mirror. And while Rodgers’ comments on Wilson raised eyebrows, he was very happy with Bernard in the same press conference. At the end of the day, Jennings doesn’t think Aaron Rodgers should have said anything at all.
