Chelsea moved decisively to beat Arsenal to Rogers after the champions had spent weeks positioning themselves at the front of the queue for the Aston Villa star.

Chelsea beat Arsenal to Morgan Rogers
Arsenal’s interest in Rogers was serious.
Sky Sports reported during the summer that Rogers had become Arsenal’s leading attacking target, with the Gunners expected to approach Aston Villa following England’s World Cup campaign.
Chelsea did not give them the chance.

The significance of that decision is already becoming clearer.
Rogers has made immediate Chelsea impact
Rogers did not arrive cheaply.
But Chelsea wanted an attacker who could run powerfully with the ball, operate across several positions and give Alonso another direct threat alongside Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.
The early evidence has been encouraging.
The Guardian notes that Rogers has already contributed to four of Chelsea’s seven Premier League goals this season.
That output has helped Chelsea win their opening two league matches.

Palmer wants the ball in pockets and can slow attacks down before finding the decisive pass.
Rogers offers something different.

That could become particularly important at Arsenal.

Sunday creates an obvious subplot.
Arsenal knew exactly what Rogers could offer.

Instead, he will arrive at the Emirates wearing Chelsea blue.
Arsenal have started the season with two victories and two clean sheets, making this easily the toughest defensive challenge Alonso’s attack has faced so far.
Chelsea have been preparing for that challenge throughout the week, with Sunday’s Arsenal clash representing their first major away examination under Alonso.
Rogers does not need to justify £117m in one afternoon.
But football has a habit of producing these moments.
Arsenal spent much of the summer trying to position themselves to sign him.
Chelsea moved faster.
