Paul Merson has delivered a remarkable verdict on Chelsea’s summer transfer business, claiming those responsible for the money raised through departures “should be knighted”.
The former Arsenal midfielder was discussing Chelsea’s window alongside Kris Boyd on Sky Sports News after another enormous overhaul at Stamford Bridge.
Merson was particularly impressed by how successfully Chelsea shifted players while still reshaping Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Merson stunned by Chelsea transfer sales
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Merson said: “The money Chelsea got for the players they got rid of, they should be knighted.”
Chelsea conducted one of the Premier League’s most aggressive selling windows, with The Guardian estimating the club generated around £500million through sales and loans.
The headline departure came on deadline day when Chelsea approved Enzo Fernandez’s £125m-plus move to Manchester City.
Fernandez was only one part of a much wider squad clear-out.
Chelsea moved on numerous players considered surplus to Alonso’s plans while continuing to spend heavily on the likes of Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Martinez and Maxence Lacroix.
Different published totals vary depending on whether add-ons and loan income are included, but Sky Sports’ post-window analysis underlined the extraordinary scale of Chelsea’s trading.
Chelsea still left with one major question
Merson’s praise does not mean Chelsea emerged from deadline day without problems.
The Blues sanctioned Fernandez’s departure believing they would strengthen midfield before the window closed.
That did not happen.
A written agreement for Lamine Camara collapsed when Monaco pulled out, while Chelsea also made an unsuccessful £65m move for Everton midfielder James Garner.
That left Alonso with fewer natural midfield options than originally planned.

Even so, the financial side of Chelsea’s business has clearly impressed Merson.
The test now is whether Alonso can make the reshaped squad look as successful on the pitch as Chelsea’s recruitment team made the outgoing deals look on paper.
