Manchester City made it three wins from three to start the 2026/27 Premier League season on Saturday afternoon, defeating newly-promoted Coventry by 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
A shaky start from Enzo Maresca’s men went unpunished and they went in ahead at half-time thanks to Erling Haaland’s third goal of the campaign - a powering header from Antoine Semenyo’s cross.
Things rarely came easily for Manchester City on a challenging afternoon and they were made to protect their lead in the second-half, but they eventually saw out a victory which keeps them at the top of the table in the early stages of the season.
The first chance of the game didn’t come from any manner of attacking play, but from an almost catastrophic blunder. Gianluigi Donnarumma received a back-pass under pressure from Taiwo Awoniyi and his touch was heavy, almost carrying the ball straight into his own goal, with a hasty clearance needed to avoid the Italian’s second straight own goal.
Nerves were hardly settled soon after when Semenyo’s wayward pass put Awoniyi clear through on goal. Thankfully for the Blues, the Nigerian passed up the opportunity, sliding his shot wide from the one-on-one.
Elliot Anderson seemed the sharpest man in blue in the early exchanges and his quick free-kick set Rayan Cherki free to create the hosts’ first chance - the Frenchman sliding Haaland in behind to be denied by Carl Rushworth.
Manchester City were finding their feet, and came mere inches from taking the lead. Marc Guehi’s terrific pass gave debutant Enzo Fernandez acres to drive into and tee up Cherki, who stepped inside and unleashed, but unluckily saw his effort rebound off the post.
Coventry came again up the other end and Gianluigi Donnarumma was required to deny Jack Rudoni from close range. Cov were made to regret that miss within moments, as Fernandez’s pinpoint ball sent Semenyo chasing down the byline on the right and he fired over a deep cross, with Erling Haaland throwing himself at the ball to divert in with a bulleted diving header.
Manchester City took control of the half thereafter without too often threatening the visitors’ goal, until the stroke of half-time when Haaland ought to have doubled his tally for the afternoon. The Norwegian exchanged passes with Cherki and bore down on goal, but Rushworth stood tall to deny the striker.
The second-half started with the Blues in control again, and Haaland was once more denied his brace just before the hour mark. He had flicked an Iliman Ndiaye cross into Fernandez’s pass and snaffled in when the Argentinian returned it to him, only to find the offside flag had been raised for the initial pass.
The lead remained at just one though, and Coventry weren’t going away. Iliman Ndiaye’s tackle broke for Loum Tchaouna and he ran through, but Donnarumma got down smartly to push the shot away.
That second goal still eluded City going into the closing moments; Haaland appeared to control a cross with his hand but play went on as he teed up Phil Foden, only for Bobby Thomas to clear off the line. It was end-to-end by this point, with Donnarumma soon needed again to deny Ellis Simms with his face.
It ended up a far edgier afternoon at the Etihad Stadium than many expected, but Manchester City battled to their win and now launch straight into their UEFA Champions League campaign against Porto on Tuesday.

Extremely dicey moment on the goal-line in the early moments, but more than made up for it thereafter. Produced three huge saves to protect Manchester City’s lead.
Abdukodir Khusanov - 7
Important as ever with his recovery pace on the cover. Coventry couldn’t muster much to threaten him down the right flank.
Ruben Dias - 7
Was needed to produce more box defending than he might have expected in a game where Manchester City were heavy favourites. Played the ball out functionally.
Marc Guehi - 8
Did all of his defending in a really accomplished manner, and picked out some great passes from the back to boot.
Josko Gvardiol - 7.5
An all-action showing on the left, often providing a threat on the overlap in the first-half then defending intelligently as Manchester City’s backs were against the wall in the second.
Elliot Anderson - 8.5 (POTM)
Simply everywhere. Seems to already be the calming figure in the middle that his teammates look to to control proceedings when the pressure is on, while also being an out-of-possession monster. Manchester City have a gem on their hands.
Enzo Fernandez - 7.5
Already has the makings of nice link-up with his new teammates - even though he only came into the starting side due to Nico O’Reilly’s injury in the warm-up. Played a key role in the first goal and was denied a first assist for the club by a tight offside. Influence waned somewhat before his second-half withdrawal.
Antoine Semenyo - 6.5
Is in the team to make goals for his team, but almost handed one to the opposition with a nightmare giveaway to Taiwo Awoniyi. He did then turn provider for Erling Haaland in style and made other threatening moves in behind, but rarely pulled off what he was going for.
Rayan Cherki - 7
Not quite the same fireworks as his masterclass at Selhurst Park last week, but still a highly creative showing from the Frenchman. Ought to have had at least one assist from the chances he carved out, particularly for Erling Haaland.
Iliman Ndiaye - 6.5
Worked exceedingly hard on his debut, showcasing that work-rate which made him a fan favourite at Everton. The other standout aspect of his game - his explosive attacking play - wasn’t quite as evident, but it’s sure to come.
Erling Haaland - 7
Made all manner of threatening moves in behind Coventry, some of which were picked out and some of which weren’t. He couldn’t make the most of some chances, but was clinical when it mattered for what proved to be the winner.
Substitutes
Phil Foden - 6.5
Wasn’t as inventive as Rayan Cherki in that No.10 role, but sensible in possession where it was necessary to help protect the lead.
Ayyoub Bouaddi - 6.5
Similarly confident and composed in helping lower the tempo.
