Chelsea’s 32-shot warning exposes problem Bompastor must fix fast

Chelsea Women took 32 shots against Aston Villa and spent much of Saturday afternoon camped inside the visitors’ penalty area. Somehow, they left Stamford Bridge with only one goal and one point.

That makes the 1-1 draw more than simply a frustrating opening result.

It exposed an issue Sonia Bompastor may need to solve quickly if Chelsea are going to turn territorial dominance into a sustained WSL title challenge.

Aston Villa managed only seven attempts and five touches inside Chelsea’s penalty area, compared with 57 for the Blues, yet a late Veerle Buurman own goal was enough to cancel out Lauren James’ opener. The Guardian’s match report details just how one-sided the attacking numbers became.

Chelsea created almost everything except the second goal

There was plenty for Bompastor to like.

Chelsea pressed aggressively, repeatedly forced Villa into errors and allowed James the freedom to dictate attacks around the penalty area.

Her 11th-minute finish was excellent.

Ellie Carpenter also threatened, Aggie Beever-Jones had a goal ruled out and Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma produced an outstanding performance.

The problem was what Chelsea did with the sheer volume of opportunities surrounding those moments.

Thirty-two shots should not produce a contest which remains alive in the 80th minute.

Once it did, Villa only needed one moment.

Chelsea failed to clear Lynn Wilms’ delivery, Noelle Maritz’s effort was blocked by Hannah Hampton and the rebound went in off Buurman.

It was brutal punishment for the hosts.

But Chelsea had given Villa the opportunity to punish them.

Chelsea’s striker situation suddenly matters

The attacking context is important.

Chelsea entered the WSL opener without Mayra Ramirez, while Melvine Malard was also unavailable.

Ramirez is still being carefully rebuilt following a long injury lay-off, with Bompastor explaining before the Villa match that Chelsea do not want to rush their No.9 back.

ReadChelsea reported on Ramirez’s continued absence before Saturday’s opener.

That left Beever-Jones leading the line.

The academy graduate remains one of Chelsea’s most exciting attacking players, but Saturday was an afternoon when she could not provide the clinical edge Chelsea needed.

That does not suddenly make her the problem.

It does highlight why having several different centre-forward options is so important.

Malard demonstrated that in Europe when she came off the bench and scored twice against Real Sociedad.

Ramirez offers a completely different physical presence when fully fit.

Chelsea need those options because there will be more games like Saturday.

An issue Chelsea had already been warned about

This is not entirely new.

ReadChelsea highlighted the attacking challenge facing Bompastor after Chelsea’s 5-2 first-leg victory over Real Sociedad.

Five goals made that result look comfortable, but the wider question was how Chelsea would replace departed attacking production and build a frontline capable of sustaining a title challenge.

Saturday provided the other side of that equation.

Chelsea can create.

James looked outstanding. Carpenter repeatedly advanced. Keira Walsh and Wieke Kaptein helped keep Villa pinned back.

What they could not do was kill the game.

That distinction will matter even more against stronger opponents.

Chelsea travel to Manchester United next weekend before Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge later in September.

Those teams are unlikely to allow 32 attempts.

Bompastor therefore does not need Chelsea to create more.

She needs them to make what they already create count.
