Liverpool are reportedly one of the clubs interested in signing Dani Carvajal on a free transfer after the close of the Premier League transfer window.
The Reds used Ronald Araujo at right-back in their first win of the league campaign over Ipswich, with the Barcelona loanee impressing massively in the 2-0 victory.
It was refreshing to see a player in the Liverpool defence whose only desire is to keep a clean sheet. While he might be a bit limited in other areas, there is no denying that Araujo is a monstrous defender on his day.
That said, using a centre-back at fullback constrains Liverpool’s buildup play to an extent. Araujo is a ball-playing centre-half and after playing under Hansi Flick, his ability to contribute from the back is impressive, however, a natural right-back would be preferable.
Speaking on TNT Sports, former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott hinted that Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in signing Dani Carvajal on a Bosman transfer.
The Spanish right-back, who won the Champions League six times with Real Madrid between 2013 and 2024, is without a club at the moment and is an interesting option for Liverpool.
Lescott said: “I think there’s talk of Liverpool – Carvajal – right back. So yeah, I would say Liverpool as well.”
Interestingly, David Ornstein was standing next to Lescott when he said this and he didn’t refute it. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true or that it will happen, but it’s an interesting detail nonetheless.

Liverpool would have ideally signed a younger right-back, but if it was a choice between Carvajal and spending the entire season with Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley as only right-back options, I would opt for bringing the former Madrid captain to Anfield.
His experience would certainly be valuable, although it’s debatable if he’s at the level required to perform to a high level in the Premier League week in, week out.
That said, I am quite keen to see how this transfer experiment would work.
Liverpool need defensive stability above all else and he could, in theory, provide that.
Certainly to a higher level than Frimpong can.
