Liverpool made late-summer contact over signing of player who"could be a superstar"

**Liverpool reportedly made contact over a move for highly-rated Wolves youngster Mateus Mane during the summer, a new transfer report has claimed.**

Despite endless transfer rumours regarding attacking signings, the Reds only brought in Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz, much to the chagrin of some supporters.

Cody Gakpo did at least stay put, though, with the Dutchman making an impressive start to the season, including registering two assists for Alexander Isak in Liverpool’s 2-0 win away to Ipswich.

According to [_TEAMtalk_](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/mateus-mane-transfer-news-liverpool-manchester-united-talks-wolves-stance), the Reds “held conversations” regarding a move for Mane late in the summer transfer window, as did rivals Manchester United.

He was looked at as “both a permanent signing and a potential buy-to-loan-back option”, but Wolves were said to be “insistent that the youngster was not available for transfer and refused to entertain the prospect of letting him leave.”

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Everton, Brighton, Newcastle United and Brentford have “all made contact” as well, highlighting how highly the 18-year-old is thought of.

**Mateus Mane could be an ideal Liverpool signing in 2027**

-----------------------------------------------------------

Mane is a huge talent with most of his career ahead of him, and he could be a fantastic signing for Liverpool, having been praised by [Paul Merson](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/can-be-a-superstar-sky-sports-pundit-gives-mateus-mane-ultimate-praise-but-issues-warning-over-wolves-star-youngster-5634391) in the past:

_“He is something for the fans, they need something to get them up. He is enthusiastic, he has scored a couple of goals and he looks like he could be a superstar. He works hard and I like his attitude. There is a lot of pressure on him for a young kid. It is like, if Mane plays we’ve got a chance, when really he should be coming in for a couple of games and then coming back out.”_

Mane is at his best on the left wing, which means signing him may only make sense if Cody Gakpo leaves next summer, but Bradley Barcola and Rio Ngumoha are also options there.

But the teenage Portugal Under-21 international can also shine as an attacking midfielder and on the right flank, so he would give Andoni Iraola both versatility and long-term quality.

If Liverpool don’t end up signing Mane, one of their Premier League rivals likely will, so they will hopefully remain deep in the conversation for him in 2027.
