Chelsea travel to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon with Xabi Alonso facing one major selection dilemma in midfield ahead of a heavyweight Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Moises Caicedo remains a serious doubt after lasting only 13 minutes on his return against Brighton, with Alonso confirming Chelsea would make a final call following Saturday’s assessment. ReadChelsea has already covered the latest Caicedo injury update ahead of Arsenal.
That uncertainty makes Reece James increasingly likely to start centrally, particularly after Alonso revealed he expects the Chelsea captain to play significant minutes in midfield this season. ReadChelsea explored Alonso’s huge prediction for James following Enzo Fernandez’s departure.
Chelsea predicted lineup vs Arsenal
Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1):
||||
Position Player Tactical role
GK Emiliano Martínez Provides experience and authority behind the back three.
RCB Wesley Fofana Athletic defender capable of covering Arsenal’s runners.
CB Maxence Lacroix Recovery pace will be vital against Arsenal transitions.
LCB Levi Colwill Chelsea’s main left-footed distributor in the first phase.
RWB Pedro Neto Gives Chelsea speed and direct running down the right.
CM Romeo Lavia Offers control and ball security against Arsenal’s press.
CM Reece James Adds physicality, passing range and defensive protection centrally.
LWB Jorrel Hato More defensive option for dealing with Arsenal’s right-sided threat.
AM Morgan Rogers Carries the ball through pressure and attacks space behind midfield.
AM Cole Palmer Chelsea’s principal creator between Arsenal’s midfield and defence.
ST João Pedro Mobile focal point capable of linking attacks and pressing from the front.
Reece James could get major midfield role
The biggest change from Chelsea’s previous Premier League lineups could come in midfield.
Fernandez’s £125million transfer to Manchester City has removed one of Alonso’s most experienced central options, while Chelsea failed to complete a replacement before the deadline.
James has therefore become even more important.
Alonso has publicly backed the 26-year-old to become one of the world’s leading midfielders and expects him to receive plenty of minutes in the position.
That makes Sunday an obvious opportunity to use him there.
The Standard also predicts James will partner Romeo Lavia in midfield if Caicedo is not deemed ready to start.
Caicedo remains Chelsea’s biggest decision
Caicedo is the player who could still alter the entire XI.
The Ecuador international missed Chelsea’s opening games before returning from the bench against Brighton, only to come off again shortly afterwards.
Alonso confirmed on Friday that Chelsea would make the final decision on his availability after Saturday’s assessment.
If Caicedo is passed fit enough to start, he would immediately become a strong candidate to partner James.
But given the midfielder’s interrupted preparation and the intensity Arsenal are likely to impose, Chelsea may decide the safer option is to begin with Lavia and use Caicedo from the bench if required.
Palmer and Rogers should keep their places
There should be fewer doubts further forward.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have quickly established themselves as two of Alonso’s most dangerous attacking players.
Rogers in particular gives Chelsea a ball-carrying threat which could be crucial against Arsenal’s aggressive press.
ReadChelsea’s Arsenal match guide outlines how the defending champions have started the league season with consecutive clean sheets.
Palmer’s ability to receive possession between the lines will therefore be essential if Chelsea are to disrupt Arsenal’s defensive structure.
João Pedro is expected to lead the line ahead of them.
Hato gets the nod on the left
Jorrel Hato and Pep Chavarria are Alonso’s main options at left wing-back.
I’d predict Hato for this one.
Chelsea are likely to spend longer defending without the ball than they did against Fulham or Brighton, and Hato offers the more conservative option against Arsenal’s right-sided combinations.
He has also already admitted Chelsea need to improve defensively after conceding five goals in their opening two league games.
With Arsenal yet to concede this season, Alonso may favour balance over another aggressive attacking selection.
