Harrison Smith isn’t ready to call it a career just yet.
The Minnesota Vikings and the veteran safety have agreed to a one-year contract that will bring Smith back for a 15th NFL season. According to multiple reports, the deal is worth up to $16.25 million with incentives.
Smith, 37, has spent his entire NFL career with the Vikings after being selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Notre Dame. He’s one of the most versatile safeties in the NFL with 39 interceptions and 21.5 sacks across his career.
Smith did not participate in offseason workouts, minicamp or training camp, and remained silent about his future throughout the offseason.
The reunion addresses a need in Minnesota’s secondary after veteran safety Jamal Adams suffered a season-ending injury during the preseason. Smith’s familiarity with defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ system and his leadership made him a natural fit to return as the Vikings prepare for the start of the regular season.
The Vikings open the season Sept. 13 against the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium.
