The Minnesota Vikings have been shaking up their 53-man roster pretty much since the moment it was “finalized” last weekend. On a daily basis, guys have been coming and going from the active roster, the practice squad and the waiver wire.
Minnesota Vikings get legendary safety back for one more season
But Saturday’s roster news carries a bit more weight than all the moves we’ve seen so far… combined. With just a week remaining until the start of the regular season (Sep. 13 vs Green Bay), Vikings safety Harrison Smith has finally made up his mind.
He’s going to play another season… and even plans on suiting up next Sunday against the Packers.

Harrison Smith will return to the Minnesota Vikings as the NFL’s active leader in interceptions (39), to go along with his 1108 career tackles, 13 forced fumbles, 21.5 sacks and 106 passes defended.
Each of the past two seasons, even at the ripe age of 37, the Hitman has produced multiple interceptions. In 2022, he picked off the opposing quarterback 5 times. But really, what Harrison Smith brings to Brian Flores’ defense cannot be measured on the stat sheet.
The Vikings refer to Harry has an extra coach, on the field, the way he can adjust the defensive scheme at the line of scrimmage. His presence alone is key to what makes B-Flo’s defense unpredictable, and oftentimes unbeatable.
Bringing Harrison Smith back wasn’t cheap
The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport (ESPN), who noted that Smith’s deal won’t be cheap, by any means. A guy isn’t going to get out of bed at his age unless you give him a financial reason to do so.
There had been some rumblings in recent days that Smith has been holding out recently for a higher payday. His reported $12.25 million number ($16.25M w/incentives) takes up the majority of what Minnesota had remaining in 2026 cap space, lending credibility to those rumors.
