Chelsea travel to Arsenal carrying an unwanted defensive record that Xabi Alonso must somehow end against the Premier League champions.
The Blues have conceded in 18 consecutive Premier League matches, their longest league run without a clean sheet since a remarkable 31-game sequence stretching from November 1960 to August 1961.
Chelsea have started the new season with maximum points and a league-high seven goals, but they have already conceded five times.
That imbalance creates an obvious concern ahead of Sunday’s trip to an Arsenal side who have barely allowed opponents a sight of goal.

Chelsea clean-sheet drought reaches 18 games
Chelsea’s last Premier League clean sheet came against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on 17 January.
Their last away shutout in the competition arrived even earlier, at Bournemouth on 6 December.
The current run has now surpassed anything Chelsea have endured in the league for more than six decades.
There had been signs of the problem before Alonso arrived, but the opening weeks of his tenure have done little to calm it.
Chelsea conceded twice in their opening Premier League victory over Fulham before surviving an extraordinary 4-3 win over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.
There have been 12 goals across Chelsea’s opening two league matches, seven scored and five conceded.
Only Leeds United in 2020/21 and Arsenal in 2004/05 have been involved in more goals across their opening two Premier League fixtures.
Chelsea have been entertaining.
They have not yet been secure.
Arsenal provide the complete opposite
That contrast becomes particularly stark at the Emirates.
Arsenal have won their opening two league games without conceding and have allowed just one shot on target in total.
Coventry managed one.
Aston Villa managed none.
David Raya’s clean sheet at Villa Park was the 50th of his Premier League career in only 109 starts, making him the fifth-fastest goalkeeper to reach that landmark.
Only Chelsea legend Petr Cech, among others ahead of Raya on the list, reached 50 faster, doing so in 82 starts.
Arsenal have also won their last four Premier League home matches without conceding.
For Chelsea, the challenge could hardly be clearer.
One side has become extremely difficult to score against.
The other has forgotten how to finish a league game without conceding.
Alonso must find more control
Alonso will know that Chelsea cannot continually rely on their attack to rescue them.
The Brighton game demonstrated both sides of his early Chelsea team.
The Blues were devastating going forward despite having only 26 per cent possession, scoring four times from 17 attempts.
But allowing Brighton to turn a commanding Chelsea position into a 4-3 finish highlighted why ReadChelsea identified defensive control as the glaring problem ahead of the Arsenal fixture.
That issue becomes even more dangerous at the Emirates.
Arsenal are comfortable controlling territory, protecting leads and winning narrow matches. Their 1-0 victory over Aston Villa was their 14th Premier League win by that scoreline across the last three seasons, six more than any other club during that period.
Chelsea therefore cannot afford the cheap moments they survived against Brighton.
Their defensive spacing when possession changes hands will matter.
So will protecting the penalty area at set pieces and preventing Arsenal establishing sustained pressure around the box.
Another unwanted Arsenal record awaits
Chelsea’s defensive drought is not the only troubling run Alonso inherits.
Arsenal are unbeaten in the last nine Premier League meetings between the clubs and have won the previous four league encounters at the Emirates.
Sunday’s meeting therefore represents the clearest measure yet of Alonso’s early progress.
Chelsea have already proved they can score.
Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Morgan Rogers give them enough attacking quality to threaten almost anyone.
But ending Arsenal’s dominance of this fixture may depend on the opposite end of the pitch.
Chelsea have gone 18 Premier League matches waiting for a clean sheet.
There would be few better places to finally get one than the home of the champions.
