Loris Karius became the first goalkeeper since July 2025 to keep a clean sheet against Bayern Munich, ending a 59-game scoring streak across all competitions.
Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side were last held goalless against Paris Saint-Germain in last summer’s Club World Cup quarter-final on July 5.
At least one goal followed in their next 59 competitive games, until they faced Karius’ Schalke in the Bundesliga on Saturday and were left to return to Munich with a 0-0 draw.
The newly-promoted side hosted a rotated Bayern outfit in their first home game in the Bundesliga since May 2023, with Harry Kane and Michael Olise starting from the bench.
Ex-Red Luis Diaz remained on the left wing but spurned two chances either side of halftime, first with a poor finish when one-on-one with Karius, and later with a tame chip cleared.
The Bundesliga champions dominated possession (83%-17%), had 52 touches in Schalke’s box compared to their 10, yet only managed five shots on target from 15 attempts.
Karius, who is Schalke’s No. 1 goalkeeper, completed five crucial saves, including a fingertip stop to brilliantly deny Kane a finish in the top right corner from outside the box.
Manuel Neuer, who lined up at the opposite end of the pitch, commended Karius’ performance after the stalemate.

As per the Bundesliga, he said: “Loris Karius was very good and definitely the right choice for Man of the Match. We had three big chances that he kept out.
“That was definitely key to us not winning this game.”
Loris Karius is rebuilding his career in Germany
The 33-year-old, who recently admitted he contemplated retiring in the wake of the 2018 Champions League final, was named the Man of the Match as his career revival continued.
After previously going 728 days between competitive appearances (2021-2023), Karius has now played 34 times for Schalke since last August after assuming the role as first-choice ‘keeper.
He signed a contract extension until 2028 in the summer and is now earning recognition for his ability between the sticks rather than being defined by a forgettable night in Kyiv.

And despite earning plenty of attention for keeping Bayern off the scoresheet, he was more focused on praising his teammates after the match.
“It was great for me,” he said of the match, via the Bundesliga. “I only had to shout to keep going, move up, drop back. Real credit to the guys for what they did.
“They kept so much away and made things so incredibly hard for Bayern. The guys really worked hard until they couldn’t go anymore. Everyone today can be proud of their performance.”
