When Everton and Manchester United walk out at the Hill Dickinson this afternoon, another little piece of history will be made.
These two have been taking chunks out of each other for well over a century, although United weren’t even called Manchester United when it all started.
The first meeting came in September 1892, when Everton beat Newton Heath 6-0.
Things have been rather less straightforward since.
Ahead of today’s game, the clubs have met 217 times in competitive matches, with Everton winning 72, drawing 48 and losing 97.
Among those stats are some memorable Everton afternoons.
From Newton Heath to Wembley
The fixture stretches back to the earliest years of league football, but its most famous Everton chapter came at Wembley in May 1995.
Joe Royle’s ‘Dogs of War’ had already beaten United 1-0 at Goodison in the league that February.
Three months later, they did it again when it really mattered.
Paul Rideout’s header gave Everton a 1-0 FA Cup final victory, with Neville Southall and the Blues’ defence repelling everything United threw at them.
It remains Everton’s most recent major trophy.
Ten years later, another 1-0 win became memorable for very different reasons.
Duncan Ferguson’s second-half header gave David Moyes’ Everton victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s United in April 2005 – Everton’s first league win against them for a decade.
Goodison was absolutely bouncing.
The mad ones
Then there are the games that defy description.
In September 2010, Everton trailed 3-1 going into stoppage time at Goodison.
Tim Cahill scored. Mikel Arteta scored. And somehow it finished 3-3.
Less than two years later came an even more ridiculous afternoon at Old Trafford.
United led 4-2 with seven minutes remaining and appeared to be cruising towards another victory.
Nikica Jelavić made it 4-3.
Steven Pienaar made it 4-4.
Those dropped points proved hugely significant as United eventually lost the Premier League title to Manchester City on goal difference.
Evertonians weren’t particularly upset.
Fellaini, Moyes and another famous night
A few months after the 4-4 came another one for the ages.
United arrived at Goodison on the opening weekend of the 2012/13 season with Robin van Persie newly signed from Arsenal.
Marouane Fellaini was unimpressed.
He bullied United for much of the evening and headed the only goal as Moyes’ side won 1-0 under the Goodison lights.
The following season Moyes was in the opposite dugout.
Everton went to Old Trafford in December 2013 and won 1-0, Bryan Oviedo scoring late on to give Roberto Martínez’s side their first victory there since 1992.
Funny ol’ game and all that.
Four at Goodison
There was another memorable Goodison afternoon in April 2019.
Everton didn’t just beat United.
They hammered them.
Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott scored in a 4-0 victory.
One of those strange Goodison afternoons when everything clicked.
United barely knew what had hit them.
The recent story
Recent history has been rather less kind.
Everton’s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in November 2025 was a notable exception, with the Blues ending a long wait for a league victory there.
United got their revenge when the sides met at the Hill Dickinson in February, winning 1-0.
Before that, the final Goodison meeting between the clubs had finished 2-2 in February 2025.
So today’s game brings United to the Hill Dickinson for only the second time.

United have undoubtedly had the better of this fixture overall. But Everton have provided them with some properly horrible afternoons along the way.
After the week the Blues have just endured, today wouldn’t be a bad time to add another one.
