The Knicks will get their championship celebration on Oct. 20 against Philadelphia. Three nights later, they are in Boston.
I love that as an early test. The banner, the opener, the attention, then a road game against a Celtics team that has spent years making New York earn every inch. There is no gentle entry into a title defense.
The 2026-27 schedule puts the Knicks at Boston on Friday, Oct. 23. The franchises have met more than 500 times in the regular season and 15 times in the playoffs, so a game in late October will still have plenty attached to it.
New York beat Boston in six games during the 2025 Eastern Conference semifinals. That history does not decide the next game, but nobody in either building will treat this like an ordinary Friday in October.
Knicks get an immediate road check
The opener will have all the emotion that comes with a ring ceremony. Boston is the reset. It asks Jalen Brunson and the rest of the group to get back to the work quickly, in a place where the crowd will want no part of the celebration from three nights earlier.

The game will not determine the East. It can show whether the Knicks are ready to play with the edge that got them through last spring.
Boston will make the Knicks earn it
Good teams should want this kind of start. The Knicks know Boston’s personnel, Boston knows theirs, and neither side needs a reminder about the recent playoff series.
The schedule makers put a real game in front of New York right away. By the end of that first week, the Knicks will have a much clearer sense of what their title defense feels like away from the Garden.
