Jamal Mashburn's camp breaks silence on Monaco fiasco, explains failed takeover

Jamal Mashburn's representatives explained why his proposed takeover of AS Monaco collapsed, citing legal, financial, and compliance concerns rather than a lack of funding or interest.

The representatives of former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn have addressed the failed attempt to take over AS Monaco.

Mashburn's name emerged as a potential investor in the club toward the end of last season, but despite negotiations, the deal ultimately did not materialize.

After failing to secure new investors, Monaco have been forced to drop to France's third division following five seasons of competing in the EuroLeague playoffs.

Helen Holdings, the investment fund founded by the former All-Star, which had positioned itself to invest in the club, shared a statement with L'Equipe explaining why the deal fell through.

Helen Holdings addresses failed Monaco takeover

"Jamal Mashburn never publicly confirmed that a transaction had been finalized. Despite a genuine desire to reach an agreement, no deal could ultimately be completed. Helen Holdings intended to invest significant capital, stabilize the club and contribute to building a sustainable long-term project. However, the transaction raised historical, legal and financial issues that could not be resolved within the allotted timeframe.

"As the due-diligence process progressed, it became apparent that a new investor risked taking responsibility not only for the club's future, but also for historical liabilities, existing commitments and previous obligations. All of these matters required greater clarification and stronger legal protections than could reasonably be obtained within the imposed timetable. Significant uncertainties also remained over the project's immediate future, including infrastructure and the arena.

"These concerns directly affected the ability to complete the deal by significantly changing the investment's risk profile. During the final stages, certain banking compliance requirements could not be resolved, preventing the transaction from being completed.

"It was not possible to responsibly accept unlimited exposure to insufficiently defined liabilities and to risks over which a new investor would have had limited, if any, control.

"Throughout the process, Helen Holdings and its advisers worked to find solutions. That proved impossible. This was neither a loss of interest on Mr. Mashburn's part nor an inability to provide the financing."

Mashburn's camp also addresses Pau-Orthez case

Mashburn and his advisers have also faced criticism because his name was previously associated with the takeover of Pau-Lacq-Orthez as part of an American-backed project in 2021 that quickly collapsed.

His representatives used the statement provided to L'Equipe to address that situation as well.

"Mr. Mashburn was part of a consortium considering that acquisition and participated in the due-diligence process. Based on the information uncovered, he concluded that his involvement was no longer justified. He withdrew before any acquisition took place and was never involved either in that transaction or in the events that followed.

"Portraying either that situation or the AS Monaco case as a last-minute withdrawal does not accurately reflect what happened or how a serious investment process works," the statement concluded.
