Arsenal Women spent the summer rebuilding Renée Slegers’ squad. It took only one competitive match for several of those decisions to start making sense.
Four summer signings were named in Arsenal’s starting XI for Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Brighton, with Misa Rodríguez, Ona Batlle, Georgia Stanway and Lisa Baum all trusted from the opening whistle.
Baum scored the winner. Rodríguez produced an important early save. Batlle and Stanway immediately occupied significant roles in Arsenal’s new-look structure.
After weeks discussing what Arsenal’s recruitment could change, the rebuild finally produced three WSL points.

Four Arsenal signings trusted immediately by Slegers
The scale of Arsenal’s summer business meant Slegers faced several major selection decisions before the opening weekend.
As our Arsenal Women season preview examined, the club brought in Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Géraldine Reuteler, Lisa Baum, Misa Rodríguez and Isabella Damm before Élisa De Almeida became the latest arrival.
Arsenal did not recruit that extensively simply to improve the bench.
Brighton provided the first evidence.
Rodríguez was preferred in goal and justified that decision almost immediately.
Kiko Seike broke clear during the opening stages and had an opportunity to put Arsenal behind, but Rodríguez stood firm to make an important save.
It became even more valuable minutes later when Baum transformed the game at the opposite end.
The 19-year-old collected possession in the Brighton half, attacked the defence directly and finished powerfully beyond Chiamaka Nnadozie for the only goal.

Rodríguez prevented Arsenal from falling behind.
Baum put them ahead.
Two summer arrivals had already shaped the result before Arsenal had properly settled into their first league game.
Batlle and Stanway show how Arsenal have changed
The impact was not limited to the two penalty areas.
Batlle started on the left of Arsenal’s defence alongside Steph Catley, Leah Williamson and Emily Fox.
Her arrival from Barcelona always offered Slegers greater flexibility, with the Spain international comfortable operating on either side.

Against Brighton, that flexibility was immediately visible.
Batlle pushed forward from the left and combined with Baum, giving Arsenal another technically secure player capable of contributing higher up the pitch.
Stanway’s influence came centrally.
Starting alongside captain Kim Little, the England international frequently dropped deeper to receive possession and helped Arsenal progress through Brighton’s pressure.
That was precisely one of the tactical changes anticipated when Arsenal brought Stanway back to England from Bayern Munich.
Her ability to play forward quickly and switch possession gives Slegers a different midfield option during matches where Arsenal dominate the ball but need to move opponents out of their defensive structure.
Arsenal had significantly more possession at Brighton, yet the game remained tight throughout.
Having experienced players such as Stanway and Batlle already comfortable within the system mattered.
Arsenal’s rebuild now has to deliver over an entire season
One victory cannot determine whether Arsenal’s transfer window has succeeded.
That judgement will come much later.
Slegers’ side have been rebuilt with the intention of winning the Women’s Super League after finishing second last season, and the schedule becomes considerably more demanding with Manchester United and Chelsea among the fixtures coming soon.
There are also summer arrivals still waiting to make their own mark.
Cerci, Reuteler and Damm increase Slegers’ options, while De Almeida adds another senior defender following her late move from Paris Saint-Germain.
That depth should become increasingly important once domestic and European commitments begin to overlap.

The most encouraging aspect of Brighton was therefore not simply that Arsenal won.
It was how quickly the summer business became relevant to winning.
Four arrivals started.
One protected Arsenal’s clean sheet when Brighton threatened early.
Another provided the decisive goal.
For a rebuild designed to turn second place into a title, that is about as encouraging a first competitive step as Slegers could have wanted.
