Morgan Rogers scored in the first minute and a half, but Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard changed the equation before the hour mark.
Xabi Alonso suffered his first defeat as Chelsea head coach in circumstances that were at once encouraging and troubling for the Spaniard. His side attacked with real verve in transition, kept hold of the ball well enough and created 13 attempts on David Raya’s goal over the 90 minutes. But the xG number of 0.35 told a different story about the quality of those opportunities against the division’s most parsimonious defence.

Rogers’ goal in 77 seconds was the third time this season that Chelsea have scored in the first few minutes of a match. Joao Pedro netted after just 31 seconds at Craven Cottage on the opening weekend, the fastest goal ever recorded in a Premier League opening round. At Stamford Bridge, Romeo Lavia scored from a fourth-minute corner against Brighton.
That immediacy speaks volumes about meticulous preparation and a clear desire to take the initiative before opponents can set up their structure. Alonso’s concern is that his side lost their momentum each time, conceding seven goals in three games despite scoring eight themselves.
Morgan Rogers answered in style at The Emirates
Arsenal had made Rogers their number one striker target of the summer, but pulled out when the valuation from Aston Villa proved too much to stomach. Chelsea’s subsequent £117m outlay made him the most expensive British footballer of all time, and so Sunday’s occasion was always going to be personal.
Under some pressure, his finish from the edge of the area was struck with great technique and conviction. He has now scored or provided an assist in all of Chelsea’s opening three league games, a run no Blues player has achieved since Eden Hazard in 2018-19.
Chance Quality Let Down Chelsea’s Big Volume
Thirteen shots is a decent return against a defence that had conceded the fewest shots in the division over the first two matchdays. Arsenal’s defence did a great job of limiting Chelsea to low-chance attempts from range, as the combined expected goals figure of 0.35 shows.
Palmer shot at Raya from the edge of the box, Gusto sent a shot from 25 yards skyward, and Rogers shot over in Chelsea’s spell of dominance. The Spanish custodian was troubled only by Estevao’s curling effort in the 89th minute. Alonso’s attacking triumvirate needs to find better positions rather than go for speculative alternatives.
Fernandez And Caicedo’s Midfield Absence
Sunday was Chelsea’s first game since Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City, with Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson both unavailable through injury. Lavia and Reece James therefore linked up in the heart of the defence for the first time against Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The set-up worked well enough for an hour, with Lavia particularly involved in breaking up Arsenal’s build-up play. However, Alonso replaced Malo Gusto with Lavia and Chelsea were then playing with two natural right-backs in central midfield.
