**Everton’s transfer window left David Moyes with a smaller squad than he wanted. Tyrique George may be one of the players who benefits from it.**
There is no pretending Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United made [Everton](https://readeverton.com/)‘s deadline-day problems disappear.
Moyes wanted more players and didn’t get them. But George offered one reason for encouragement at the Hill Dickinson.
The 20-year-old started ahead of Jack Grealish and scored a superb first Everton goal to make it 1-1 after 83 minutes. Hayden Hackney supplied the pass before George hammered his shot past Senne Lammens at the near post.
Moyes thought George had been close to man of the match.
“He is a young winger and he will need time to develop. He is a boy who wants to learn and we like him.”
Grealish’s return could easily have pushed George down the pecking order. Instead, Grealish replaced Brennan Johnson after 66 minutes and George remained on the pitch. Seventeen minutes later, he scored.
There is room for both.
Moyes spoke after the game about the possible upside of having fewer players.
“Sometimes when you’ve got less players, it means everyone has to be ready. Players on the fringes are going to have to show why they deserve to be involved.”
That doesn’t make Everton’s transfer window a good one. Moyes remains short of numbers, and Thierno Barry is his only recognised senior striker.
But a small squad does mean opportunities.
George has just taken his.
