Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez appeared to be escorted out of the Emirates Stadium by bodyguards after his side’s defeat to Arsenal. The Blues were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat to the Gunners in the Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.

Summer signing Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead in the first minute, but Arsenal responded with goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard to secure all three points in North London.

Riccardo Calafiori also had a goal disallowed for Arsenal for an offside just a few minutes after Rogers had opened the scoring for Chelsea.

Martinez was making his return to the Emirates for what was his second appearance for Chelsea after completing a permanent move from Aston Villa earlier in the summer, with the deal believed to be worth around £7.5million.

The Argentina international spent 10 years with the Gunners before leaving North London to move to Villa Park back in 2020.

Footage has emerged on social media taken on Sunday evening showing Martinez leave the Emirates and walk through the streets of North London.

The video appeared to show Martinez being accompanied by two bodyguards as they helped the Chelsea shot-stopper get safely past the crowd of fans that had spotted him outside the stadium.

The defeat to Arsenal marks the first loss that Chelsea have suffered this season under new manager Xabi Alonso, but the Blues have already been told why the signing of Martinez will prove to be a good piece of business.

Jamie Redknapp was quizzed during Sky Sports’ coverage of Ipswich Town vs Liverpool on Friday night about whether Brentford star Mamadou Sangare could be the signing of the summer.

In response, Redknapp said: "Yeah for me, and also Emi Martinez as well, that was a really smart one,” he said.

“You couldn't take Chelsea seriously this season if they kept the goalkeeper [Robert Sanchez] in place. Not that I don't think he's going to come back and have a really good career, maybe just not at Chelsea.

“But that Emi Martinez one with his experience and quality that he possesses, I think it gives Chelsea a really good chance.

“That's the question mark that everyone had against them: 'Is the goalkeeper good enough?' and he certainly is."
