Good morning, New York Giants fans! Here are the stories you need to know as Week 1 of the NFL season has finally arrived.
Check our **[Giants-Cowboys StoryStream](/new-york-giants-game-information/169969/ny-giants-vs-cowboys-nfl-week-1-news-injuries-analysis-and-more)** for all your coverage of the Giants’ season-opening game.
**Arvell Reese** (+850) is a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate:
> As the No. 5 pick, Reese immediately steps into a starting role that will give him the snap volume needed to contend. The concern is what position those snaps will come from. With Abdul Carter and Brian Burns on the edges, Reese might be limited in the linebacker role. He can still contribute as a blitzer, but the Giants might barely blitz -- Dennard Wilson’s defense in Tennessee last season ranked 28th in blitz rate. Reese’s versatility would need to translate into enough splash plays to win this award.
Wide receiver **Malachi Fields** is listed as an “under-the-radar” rookie:
> Fields has the physical profile at 6-foot-4, 218 pounds to win one-on-one targets as the boundary X receiver. Plus, the third-rounder can get the ball on deep in-breakers and underneath throws. Fields is pushing for the No. 2 role in New York, and his skill set should complement that of WR1 Malik Nabers.
“I wasn’t really a football fan when I was growing up. He kind of was the base person that literally made me start watching football, just the dances, the one-handers and he was probably the first person I started really watching when I started playing football.”
— — Malik Nabers on Odell Beckham
> Beckham was undoubtedly the most popular player at training camp. The Giants are a forgiving fanbase after Beckham left on a sour note after the 2018 season -- his behavior and distractions reached a point where then-general manager Dave Gettleman wanted him off the roster and traded him to the Cleveland Browns.
>
> Beckham, 33, is back eight years later and it’s as if none of that ever happened. He has being embraced by a fanbase that hasn’t seen much exciting football since his departure -- only one winning season in seven years. They’re hoping the former Pro Bowler can look like some semblance of the receiver who started his career with three straight seasons of at least 90 receptions and 1,300 yards.
> “I tell guys, “Exit 98’s always closed, man. I’m always there. Can’t get off on Exit 98, no car’s passing there.”
Arthur Marshall, a former Giants receiver who tied an NFL record in 1992 with an 81-yard touchdown pass, died Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
