Miami Heat newcomer Klay Thompson is already picking up nicknames following his arrival in South Florida.
Thompson was delighted to hear the "Biscayne Klay" nickname that has already been attached to him, saying anything connected to the ocean is something he is happy to embrace.
"I love it. Anything that has to do with the ocean, I'm a very nautical guy, sea captain, I'm all about. So Biscayne Klay, let's run with it," Thompson said.
The nickname is a play on Biscayne Bay, the body of water that runs along Miami and has long been closely associated with the city's waterfront identity.
That makes it an especially fitting nickname for Thompson, who is well known for his love of boating and the ocean.
It also carries another personal connection for Thompson because of his Bahamian roots. His father, former NBA No. 1 overall pick Mychal Thompson, was born and raised in Nassau, and Klay has long embraced his family's connection to the Bahamas.
That connection has become even more meaningful following his move to Miami. Thompson recently acknowledged that being closer to his family in the Bahamas was one of the attractions of joining the Heat, making the ocean-inspired "Biscayne Klay" nickname an even more natural fit.
Thompson signs with Miami after Mavs buyout exit
Klay Thompson is headed to Miami after securing a split with the Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks agreed to a contract buyout with the former NBA star, who was set to earn $17.5 million in the final season of his three-year, $50 million contract with the franchise.
Thompson expressed a desire to play for a contender, and Dallas decided to let him go after failing to find a trade resolution this offseason.
Thompson averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 21.7 minutes last season, shooting 38.3% from three in 69 games.
While he is no longer the lethal two-way force of his Golden State Warriors days, he remains highly productive and capable of contributing.
As they continue to build around their new era with the duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the addition of Thompson gives the Heat a massive upgrade ahead of a much-awaited 2026-27 NBA season.
