Harvey Elliott had a debut to forget for Valencia as his side were hammered by Barcelona in a hugely one-sided La Liga tie

Harvey Elliott's season-long loan at Valencia got off to a nightmare start on Sunday. His new side were thrashed by Barcelona 5-0 at the Estadio de Mestalla.
Goals from Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha had already put the Catalan giants in control of the La Liga fixture by the time Elliott was introduced in the 53rd minute for his debut. Yamal and Pedri then put Valencia to the sword with two late goals.
Elliott left Liverpool this summer in search of first-team football after a miserable loan spell at Aston Villa last season. The midfielder had 25 touches in Sunday's tie but only one in the Barcelona box, with Hansi Flick's men dominating possession.
The atmosphere even threatened to turn ugly as boos from Valencia fans rained down from the stands. Loud cheers then followed after the final whistle and thousands are said to have gathered outside the stadium, branding the players as 'mercenaries'.
Valencia, managed by former West Brom boss Carlos Corberan, are currently bottom of the La Liga standings, having picked up just one point from four games. After the game, Corberan said that the club's new players, such as Elliott, "still need to adapt to the team."
The Spanish media were harsh on Valencia following the rout by Barca, with Elliott also picking up some major flak. Here, theECHO takes a closer look.
Super Deporte
Elliott's fitness was pulverised in the publication's player ratings, but they caveated the barb by admitting the Liverpool player does have an abundance of star quality. He was scored a five, the joint-highest for Valencia.
They wrote: "A good long ball to Otorbi since he came on. He's slow and out of shape, but he has more quality than 99% of the players in the squad and he showed it in that short time on the pitch."
ElGolDigital
The Spanish outlet praised Elliott's showing but lamented the lack of support he received from his team-mates. They wrote: "On the pitch, he started on the right flank with permission to cut inside. He offered himself between the lines, demanded the ball facing forward, and tried to accelerate attacking moves in the opposition's half.
"This type of attacking midfielder needs two things to be effective: the team needs to maintain possession long enough, and someone needs to pin back the opposing full-back to create space for him inside.
"He had neither. Valencia strung together very few sustained attacks and spent the final stretch containing their own, meaning Elliott was almost always far from the penalty area. He showed movement and vision, but no finishing touches or final passes, which is precisely where he will be judged."

While Elliott was not targeted directly, AS wrote: "Valencia [is a] side is in a sorry state both on and off the pitch... A masterclass from an imposing team that sits atop the table. Valencia were mere toys. Lamine Yamal scored twice, forming a diabolical partnership with Fermín. Raphinha continues to score."
Mundo
Mundo were much fairer in their assessment of Elliott's performance. They rated his second-half appearance as "consistent." They claimed "Valencia's play improved somewhat from the sidelines" with the attacking player's introduction.
Las Provincias
While choosing not to single out Elliott or any other players, the outlet slammed Valencia's overall showing. They wrote: "FC Barcelona thrashed their opponents, strolled around, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and practically without much effort... Although that's also a concern; the feeling of helplessness was so profound that the players let themselves go."
The fixture list doesn't get much easier for Elliott and Valencia, with Ches Blanquinegros facing Sevilla on Friday, September 11, at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
