Benjamin Sesko admitted it was "very painful" for Manchester United to concede a late goal to Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Sesko thought he had scored the match-winner when he made it 2-1 to United in the 88th minute at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but there was another twist when Ainsley Maitland-Niles equalised in added time.

Maitland-Niles' goal condemned United to drop more points in the Premier League. Michael Carrick played down his side's underwhelming start, but United were expected to get more than four points from their three matches.

Sesko admitted the draw was a blow when he spoke to MUTV after the final whistle. “We’re very disappointed of course because we were very close [to winning] and yet so far," he said.

"To concede a goal like that in the last minute, to happen the way it did, it’s painful for everyone because everyone was giving everything to try and win the game. Every single person here wants that. In the moments like this where a last shot decides it, it’s very painful.”

He added: “For me, it's the best feeling when I’m scoring, especially for the club like that. When I can provide the goals and the points for the team - it’s my job at the end of the day. It’s nice to be back with the team to experience all the games again. Of course I wish today that we had won, but we can’t change that.

“It’s really important to take everything as positive even when it’s not the best option from today. To see the game in a good light, to try and improve and focus for the next game.”

Sesko is yet to start for United this season. The striker did not make an appearance in pre-season due to a shin injury, but he returned to full fitness in time to make the bench for the opening game of the campaign.

Asked about Sesko last week, Carrick said: "Ben is improving his fitness all the time. He had some time off, which was important to make sure it was right moving forward and no setbacks.

"You can never guarantee that, but give him a chance to be fit. He made big strides last season; he’s still young, still adapting to a point, learning, and developing his game. Loads more to come from Ben. It’s just being patient, looking after him and letting him grow into the season."
