League One clubs live on experienced midfielders who already know the division. A free agent with 150-plus appearances at that level is the profile they chase once the window has closed for bigger names.
Academy graduates who never make a first-team appearance still carry the badge. Supporters remember the loans more than the unused squad numbers.
Undisclosed contracts are normal at this level. The announcement is the signing, not the fine print.

Stevenage have agreed terms with midfielder Matt Smith on a contract of undisclosed length. The 25-year-old, a former Arsenal academy player, arrives after leaving Wigan Athletic as a free agent.
The club say he brings a wealth of EFL experience, with 159 League One appearances for Wigan, Doncaster Rovers, Charlton Athletic and Swindon Town. He came through Hale End from the age of seven, stayed on the books until 2023 and never made a senior Arsenal appearance. His first-team education was those loans: Swindon in 2020-21, Charlton later that season and a full year at Doncaster in 2021-22.
Arsenal announced his departure when his contract expired in June 2023. He joined Wigan that summer and spent three seasons there, making close to 100 appearances in all competitions before turning down or moving on from a new offer at the end of 2025-26.

Smith is a deep-lying midfielder by trade, comfortable taking the ball off centre-halves and playing through the lines. That is the job Stevenage will ask him to do in a League One midfield that needs legs and calmness more than Premier League gloss.
For Arsenal watchers this is a footnote rather than a first-team story. It does sit in a small cluster of north London ties at the Lamex. Stevenage were recently linked with a loan for goalkeeper Tommy Setford after Illan Meslier’s arrival as third choice at the Emirates. Hale End players have always filtered into the EFL. Smith is another name on that list, eight years after he first trained with the seniors in spirit only.
There are no quotes from the player or from the Stevenage manager on the club page. The welcome is the statement. A 25-year-old from Harlow, raised at Arsenal, seasoned in League One, now at a club that likes those habits. The length of the deal stays private. The connection to the old academy does not.
