Lucca Brughmans has revealed Liverpool’s long-term plans for him after completing his deadline-day move to Anfield
Lucca Brughmans completed his move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day, agreeing a long-term contract with the club before returning to Belgium for the remainder of the season.
Liverpool agreed a deal to sign the 18-year-old goalkeeper from Genk on a long-term contract before loaning him back to the Belgian club for the current campaign.

The deal could rise to £30 million including add-ons, with Brughmans set to remain on loan at Genk for the duration of the 2026-27 season after signing a six-year deal at Anfield.
The goalkeeper made his senior breakthrough after 32 matches for Genk’s second team, before being promoted to the first team and making his senior debut in April 2026.
He retained his place for the rest of that campaign, adding a further 10 league appearances.
He has continued as Genk’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, making his fifth start in a 0-0 draw against Anderlecht on Sunday, taking his senior tally to 16 appearances.
Brughmans captained Belgium at both the U17 European Championship and U17 World Cup in 2025, and currently captains his country’s U19 side.
Speaking after his move was confirmed, Brughmans discussed what lies ahead of him at Anfield.
According to HLN, he said: “Of course, I can’t fully reveal Liverpool’s plan for me here (laughs). The intention is, however, to become their first-choice goalkeeper in the long term. I’m going to do everything I can to achieve that. I still need to take steps, and I’m happy that I can do that at Genk.”
His comments confirm that Liverpool see him as a genuine long-term successor between the posts, rather than simply a squad addition for the future.
Lucca Brughmans himself acknowledges that his development is not yet complete, and that his continued progress at Genk this season is central to that plan.
Liverpool’s current goalkeeping options include Alisson, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Vitezslav Jaros and Freddie Woodman.
Alisson remains Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, but his contract expires next summer, meaning Brughmans could eventually be viewed as a long-term successor to the Brazilian, even if Mamardashvili remains at the club.
Both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid had also shown interest in Brughmans before Liverpool secured his signature.
Liverpool do have the option to bring Brughmans to Anfield as early as January, though it is considered unlikely they would exercise that option.
