Glenn Nyberg’s Arsenal record
Nyberg has previously refereed Arsenal twice in the Champions League, with Arteta’s side unbeaten across those matches.
His first Arsenal appointment came away to Sevilla in October 2023.
Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored as Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory in Spain, with UEFA’s official match information confirming Nyberg as referee.
His second appearance came in considerably higher-profile circumstances.
Nyberg officiated Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League quarter-final draw against Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in April 2024.
That game included several contentious incidents.
Bayern were unhappy not to receive a penalty after Gabriel handled the ball following a goal-kick restart, while Arsenal appealed unsuccessfully for a late penalty when Bukayo Saka went down after encountering Manuel Neuer.
The result means Arsenal’s record in Champions League matches refereed by Nyberg currently stands at:
Played: 2
Won: 1
Drawn: 1
Lost: 0
Wednesday will therefore be his first Arsenal appointment for more than two years.
Arteta’s side travel to Naples with an excellent recent European record, something we explored in our feature on Arsenal’s extraordinary Champions League streak.
The Gunners also have history on their side against their hosts, having won three of four previous meetings, as detailed in our Napoli vs Arsenal head-to-head guide.
Nyberg will now be the man in charge as Arsenal attempt to extend both records on Wednesday night.
