Dominik Szoboszlai sat down with Steven Gerrard for an interview and answered some quick-fire questions, describing Ryan Gravenberch as an octopus.
Stevie first asked Szobo who the best trainer at the club is, saying Alexis Mac Allister is the most consistent in training. This doesn’t surprise me. While the Argentine was not at his highest level last season, he is always hard-working and gives his all.
Next, Szoboszlai was asked who is the hardest Liverpool player to dispossess, and the Hungarian named Gravenberch. Calling him an “octopus” for his long legs and impressive agility when under pressure.

Szoboszlai was a bit cheeky as well when he said that there isn’t a player at the club he isn’t confident facing in a 1v1, including van Dijk. Gerrard made me laugh when he said that he’s not sure if he believes that.
An interesting aspect of the interview with Gerrard, which was done for TNT, was when he asked Szoboszlai what his favourite position is.
He said that he doesn’t like playing the No.7 role, which in a traditional sense is the right wing. It’s a pity because with his pace and ball delivery, I think he could do something similar to what Steven Gerrard accomplished on the right wing in the 2004/05 season, which was his best season in terms of goals and assists. The iconic Liverpool captain got 23 goals and 15 assists.
Szoboszlai said that his preference is playing as a “box-to-box eight.” This is where I think he’s best as well. The more mobile and free he is allowed to be, the better for Liverpool.
When he’s asked to sit and protect the back four, I get the sense Szoboszlai gets bored or loses concentration, but when he’s allowed to chase the game and play with his instinct, he’s untouchable.

Szoboszlai enjoyed his best season in a Liverpool shirt in 2025/26, with 13 goals and 12 assists.
I get the feeling that he still has several levels he can unlock, but a lot will depend on how well he is able to adapt to the demands Andoni Iraola will make of him this season.
The Spaniard is a brilliant man-manager and if the two can click, it will be fantastic for the Reds.
