The Indianapolis Colts appear set to get an important piece of their passing attack back just in time for the start of the 2026 NFL season.

Wide receiver Alec Pierce is expected to play Sunday when Indianapolis opens its season against the Baltimore Ravens after spending roughly five months recovering from ankle surgery.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen provided the encouraging update Monday after watching Pierce continue to work his way back during practice.

“He should be good to go,” Steichen said. “We’ll get him some reps and practice this week, just like he took reps last week. He’s feeling really good.”

Pierce underwent surgery in March to correct a lingering ankle issue. Indianapolis initially hoped the veteran receiver would be ready around the beginning of training camp, but his rehabilitation took longer than anticipated.

As a result, Pierce missed the entire preseason before finally returning to practice on Aug. 27. After getting through five practices, the Colts are apparently comfortable putting him back on the field for Week 1.

His return could provide an immediate boost for quarterback Daniel Jones.

Colts get the news they’ve been waiting on

Pierce and Jones have reportedly spent extra time throwing together as the receiver works to regain his timing following the extended absence. The two developed an impressive downfield connection during the 2025 season, and Indianapolis will hope they can quickly rediscover it.

Pierce established himself as one of the NFL’s most dangerous deep threats last season, leading the league with an average of 21.3 yards per reception. It marked the second consecutive season Pierce finished atop the NFL in yards per catch.

Having that big-play ability available against Baltimore could significantly change how opposing defensive backs approach Indianapolis’ passing attack.

The Colts will still have to monitor Pierce as he returns to game action after missing several months. However, Steichen’s latest comments are a strong indication that the receiver has cleared the biggest hurdles in his recovery.

After an offseason filled with uncertainty surrounding his ankle, Pierce now appears ready to make his return when the games finally count.
