The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a fresh NFL season, but while many players are getting excited about stepping on the field, one Steelers player is dealing with punishment from the NFL.
The NFL has already started up its policy of hitting players with fines based on actions taken during games that break the rules of the league. According to the NFL, the league "uses the fine schedule to outline the league’s and the union’s expectations for players to conduct themselves in a way that honors the sport and respects the game, themselves, their fellow players, the fans and the league."
The Steelers player who was just hit with a punishment is cornerback Doneiko Slaughter.
Doneiko Slaughter fined for preseason taunting
Slaughter was given a punishment from the NFL for his actions in the Steelers' final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. During the game, late in the second quarter, the player was called on the carpet for unsportsmanlike conduct after covering a deep throw and reacting by waving and giving two thumbs down. So, that's partly what got him the fine.
He was fined $4,917, which was one of the lower fines. The money raised goes to the Professional Athletes Foundation, though, so it's a good cause. The official fine category was unsportsmanlike conduct for taunting.
The highest fine of the weekend went to Indianapolis Colts player Cam Taylor-Britt, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness with striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing. He has to pay $7,791.
When the regular season kicks off, the NFL will continue to hand out fines every Saturday for the prior weekend's games.
