Much has been made about what it will be like for members of the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams as they travel to Australia to open the 2026 NFL season in Melbourne.
But what about the myriad media members who have also been dispatched Down Under to cover the game and soak up some local color?
Grant Cohn is among them, and he’s certainly making the most of his time there.
The 49ers On SI reporter has been in Melbourne since last week, and quite literally, as soon as he landed, he started documenting his experiences there. With the Niners-Rams game more than a week away, he had plenty of time to fit in some other activities, most of which appeared to be eating.

He did get a head start on some football action, though it was Australian Football League (AFL). He provided some much-needed analysis of “Patrick F***ing Dangerfield” and the Geelong Cats’ 107-74 win over Carlton for American audiences who clearly knew everything he was talking about.

That review garnered Cohn some local coverage as Australian outlets dug the sight of this American falling in love with Aussie rules football.
As a lifelong fan of the Geelong Cats since yesterday, I’d love to see the Brisbane Lions lose today.

Since then, Cohn has been devouring Australian burritos, Australian coffee, Austrian fish & chips, and the local classic dish, Pot and Parma.

Unfortunately for everyone, Cohn does have some actual work to do this week, preparing for the San Francisco-Los Angeles game. But by all accounts, he’s picked up a lot of Australian followers and readers ready to hear about what he experiences, and more specifically, eats, next.
