The NFC North is a wide open division and a good case could be made for any of the four teams to step up and become a first-place team this year. It would make sense that this game between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings is about more than just opening the season. It's about making a statement that past disappointments are not going to linger and the victor will have significant momentum going forward.
The Packers saw their season end in disappointing fashion as they lost their last four regular-season games and then blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card game.
Head coach Matt LaFleur and the Packers come into this season opener with a couple of problem areas. Primary running back Josh Jacobs is on the commissioner's exempt list and while he has a court date Sept. 10, a suspension is looming.
Micah Parsons is the key to the Green Bay defense, but he is unlikely to play until Week 5 against the Chicago Bears or Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys. He tore his ACL late in the regular season last year, and he is still rehabbing.
Vikings have recognized last season's weakness
The Vikings were out of playoff contention by Thanksgiving last season as they lost 8 of their first 12 games. While they finished the season on a 5-game winning streak, Kevin O'Connel and the Vikings have a new quarterback in Kyler Murray. The former Arizona Cardinal beat out J.J. McCarthy and was named the starter early in training camp.
Murray struggled with injuries in 2 of the past 3 seasons, but he is healthy this year and he brings high-level athleticism and an accurate passing arm.
Both LaFleur and O'Connell are under significant pressure this year. It appears a high-scoring battle will unfold at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Murray will establish connections with Jefferson and Addison in Week 1
The big problem the Vikings had with McCarthy at quarterback last year was that he regularly failed to deliver the ball accurately. Justin Jefferson is one of the game's elite receivers and McCarthy's inability to deliver the ball accurately when he was open led the Vikings to bring in Murray.
The former Cardinal has completed 67.1 percent of his passes throughout his seven-year career and he knows how to get the ball to open receivers. In addition to gaining a connection with Jefferson, Murray has reportedly built an excellent rapport with No. 2 receiver Jordan Addison. He gives the Vikings a deep threat and is an excellent complement to Jefferson.
In addition to that 1-2 punch, the Vikings have added Jauan Jennings from the 49ers, and he should be able to get open and perform at a high level as the No. 3 receiver.
Tight end T.J. Hockenson is an X-factor for the Vikings. He struggled much of last season and finished the year with 51 receptions for 438 yards and 3 TDs, and O'Connell is expecting him to be a red zone and third down factor.
Murray will throw for 250 yards and 2 TDs in his first regular-season game with the Vikings. He will also make positive plays with his legs and run for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Love will carry the Packers as far as he can

The Packers are without their best running back and best pass rusher, but their early-season schedule appears manageable. After opening the season at Minnesota, the Packers have two winnable games against the Jets and Falcons prior to a test against the Buccaneers.
LaFleur has to depend on Love to get the job done and lead the offense which may not have a credible running attack. MarShawn Lloyd takes over as the primary running back, but he is untested and unproven at this point in his career.
While the Packers are lacking on the ground, they have three dangerous wideouts in Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and explosive Matthew Golden. It will be very difficult for the Vikings secondary to contain all three, and the Packers should be able to take advantage of a unit that may not find its way until veteran Harrison Smith gets used to being back on the field. He appeared to have said goodbye to the Vikings, but he has decided to forego retirement and return for his 15th year.
Love will throw for 275 yards and 3 TD passes against the Vikings.
Vikings kicking game will make the difference
This season opener has the look of a back-and-forth game that will see both team exchange touchdowns throughout. As a result, this season opener could turn out to be the most entertaining game of the NFL's opening week.
The Vikings found a sensational kicker last year in Will Reichard. He became an All-Pro as a rookie in 2025, making 33 of 35 FG attempts and all 31 of extra-point attempts. He is comfortable on any three-point attempt of 60 yards or less. O'Connell has full confidence that Reichard will continue to produce at an elite level.
The Packers do not have that kind of advantage. They have parted company with Brandon McManus and are going with rookie Trey Smack, who was drafted in the sixth round out of Florida. He has much to prove and the Vikings have a big advantage at this point.
Look for Reichard's powerful leg to make the difference in what should be a wide-open season opener. The Vikings win the season opener with a couple of late field goals.
