Aaron Donald’s return to an NFL field has been one of the league’s biggest storylines over the past two months. Anticipation for his 2026 debut has reached a fever pitch, but the Rams have offered mixed messages regarding their star defensive tackle’s status for Week 1.
Head coach Sean McVay indicated on Friday that Donald would travel to Australia for this week’s matchup against the 49ers. But on Monday, Donald evaded questions about whether or not he would make the trip, saying onlyf (via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times) that he felt good and would “come up with a game plan and see.”
Donald declined to give a clear answer when asked if he was traveling with the team to Australia to play the 49ers, only saying that he is “feeling really good” and would “come up with a game plan and see what’s going on.”
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula offered a similarly opaque update, per Klein: “Everything’s day by day. We’re ready for him if he does, ready for him if he doesn’t, and we’ll have a plan for however many plays he feels like he can go and we’ll go from there.”
Shula’s mention of a snap count indicates that, at a minimum, Donald will not have a full workload even if he does take the field in Melbourne. He could play 10 to 15 snaps, according to Bleacher Report’s James Palmer, with the goal of ramping up his playing time as the season progresses. Donald’s contract includes incentives that require him to play at least 15% of the team’s regular-season defensive snaps. For context, the Rams defense was on the field for 1,122 plays in 2025, 15% of which is just under 170, or 10 snaps per game for 17 games. Even if he misses Week 1, Donald should still be able to hit that benchmark comfortably, provided he stays healthy during the season.
The Rams are understandably trying to manage expectations surrounding Donald’s return, both given the uncertainty of his comeback and the importance of their matchup against the 49ers. In an extremely competitive NFC West, this Week 1 matchup could make a huge difference in standings and tie-breakers at the end of the season.
The Rams leave Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Donald’s presence on the plane will be the subject of intense speculation until and unless his flight status is confirmed. Even then, certainty regarding his availability may not be known until game day, perhaps as late as 90 minutes before kickoff when teams release their inactive lists.
