There are times when you read something written aboutEverton and wish you’d written it yourself.
George Caulkin’s piece for The Athletic on Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United falls very much into that category.
He was at the Hill Dickinson for the latest instalment of The Athletic’s Our League series and opened with: “Everton against themselves, Everton against the world.”
That’s Everton, right there.
Everton being Everton
The setting may be new – and still magnificent – but what unfolded inside it on Sunday was reassuringly familiar.
A horrible week off the pitch. A thin squad. Plenty of grumbling from the stands. Manchester United ahead, Everton level, United ahead again. And then Ainsley Maitland-Niles, six minutes into added time, on his debut.
Bang. 2-2.
Caulkin’s piece is less about the nuts and bolts of the game and more about what it felt like to be there, which is probably why it hits the spot.
Because the Hill Dickinson can have all the red brick, steel and fancy food it likes. You can move Everton a mile down the road and give the place a very shiny new home.
You can’t stop Everton being Everton. Sunday proved that perfectly.
