Chelsea sit fourth with six points after a 3-2 win at Fulham, a 4-3 home victory over Brighton and a 1-2 defeat at Arsenal; they also beat Luton 2-0 in the previous cup round. The tie therefore arrives as a useful midweek test rather than a crisis game. Farke can introduce several summer arrivals who have yet to be seen by the travelling support.
Goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt as cover for James Trafford, is in contention for a first appearance. Versatile defender Melvin Bard, who joined on loan from Nice after Joe Rodon’s hamstring injury, offers another option at left-back or in a wider role. Exciting forward Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, another late window arrival from Frankfurt, gives Farke a different attacking profile. Sean Longstaff, Daniel James and Lucas Nmecha are all expected to start just as they did in the last round, while Ao Tanaka should also keep his place in midfield after an impressive display at Brighton.
Alonso is equally likely to shuffle his pack. Chelsea have Hull City at home on Saturday, and the midweek cup game is an obvious moment to rest players who started at the Emirates. Moisés Caicedo, Matteo Palestra and Jordan Henderson are already unavailable, so the Spaniard can give minutes to squad options and younger attackers without treating the fixture lightly. The early weeks of his tenure have been about bedding in ideas; Wednesday is a chance to see how far the depth stretches. For Leeds supporters it is a first look at several new faces in a hostile environment. For Chelsea it is an early test of whether Alonso’s squad can handle rotation and still progress.
