EXCLUSIVE: Alan Smith Claims One Signing Has Given Chelsea A “Great Chance To Challenge” For The Title
Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith believes the signing of Emi Martinez gives Chelsea a “great chance” of challenging Arsenal at the top of the table.
The Argentinian moved from Aston Villa for £7.5m last week, and speaking exclusively to Chelsea News (courtesy of Best Betting Sites UK), Smith gave his assessment when asked if Martinez’s arrival makes the Blues title contenders:
“Technically, he’s a much better keeper than [Robert] Sanchez and will improve the defence. He will defend his box. He’s bubbling with confidence, isn’t he? Sometimes too much, and he can get on people’s nerves. But that kind of big character, we’ve seen it in keepers down the years. Peter Schmeichel comes to mind.”
“So yeah, I think he’ll love the situation because he knows he’s badly wanted there. The fans will take to him big time. And he’s left a club at Villa where you don’t know what’s going on there for a club in Chelsea that is heading upwards. So he’ll be delighted, and it gives them a great chance to challenge.”
What are the odds of Chelsea winning the title?
The Blues are currently third favourites, with the Gunners odds-on to retain their crown, and Manchester City deemed the next likely to lift the title.
Not many would have given Alonso’s men a chance if they hadn’t made a change in goal, but the addition of Martinez, who has won many trophies in his career, including the World Cup, has given them an extra edge.
Chelsea will face Arsenal this weekend
The Blues are set to have their title credentials tested when they travel to the Emirates to take on the Gunners on Sunday evening.
Martinez will be facing one of his former clubs. He spent a decade in North London before he made the switch to Villa Park in 2020.
