Arsenal handed huge injury boost ahead of Napoli clash

Arsenal

Full training is the step that turns a doubt into a decision. Light running keeps a player around the group. Contact with the starters means the manager has a call to make.

European away nights reward rust as often as they reward freshness. A full-back who has not played since last season cannot be thrown in on hope alone.

Squad lists change in 24 hours. Yesterday’s major doubt can be tomorrow’s option on the bench.

Jurrien Timber has trained fully with Arsenal’s first team ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Napoli. The Netherlands defender has been working back from groin surgery that ruled him out of pre-season and the opening Premier League games.

Mikel Arteta said last week that Timber was getting pretty close. The defender is now expected to return to the Arsenal squad in Italy on Wednesday night which is a huge boost for the Gunners.

It is not the same as starting at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Timber has not played a competitive minute this season. Arteta has been cautious with similar recoveries and already has Ezri Konsa covering the right side of the defence after Cristhian Mosquera’s muscle strain.

William Saliba remains out with a back problem and is not expected back until November. Gabriel Magalhães started against Chelsea. Mosquera is also a doubt for Wednesday. That is why Timber’s session matters. If he comes through it cleanly he could make the matchday squad, even if he is not ready for 90 minutes in Italy.

The game kicks off at 8pm UK time and is live on TNT Sports 2. Arsenal go there with three league wins from three after coming from behind against Chelsea. A patched defence has been part of that start. Adding Timber, even as an unused substitute, would give Arteta another senior body on the bench.

There is no club statement attached to the post, only the training-ground update and a photograph. Until Arteta speaks in Italy, treat it as a step rather than a selection. Full first-team work is what supporters have waited for since the summer. Whether it is enough for Naples is the question left for Wednesday.
