Everton have been urged to consider free-agent striker Jordan Ayew as David Moyes continues to operate with precious little cover for Thierno Barry.
Ayew is available after leaving Leicester City and certainly knows his way around English football. The Ghana international has made 305 Premier League appearances, scoring 42 goals for Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester.
Ayew suggested as an Everton option
Speaking on talkSPORT, Alex Crook suggested Ayew could be the type of player Moyes would appreciate, pointing more towards his work rate than his goalscoring record.
That distinction is probably worth making. Nobody is pretending Ayew, now 34, would arrive at the Hill Dickinson as a prolific No.9, but he can play across the front and would at least give Moyes another senior attacking option.
After the Folarin Balogun deal collapsed on Deadline Day, Barry was left as Everton’s only recognised senior centre-forward. As we have already looked at, that leaves the Toffees in the slightly uncomfortable position of having to wrap Barry in cotton wool until January.
There is no report at this stage that Everton have approached Ayew, however, and they may not get much chance to change their minds.
Reports on Tuesday suggest Sheffield United are now closing in on the former Palace forward, with talks over a move to Bramall Lane having progressed. If that deal is completed, another of the free-agent strikers available to Moyes will be crossed off the list.
Whether Everton would have wanted Ayew is another question entirely. But with Barry currently carrying the No.9 burden alone, supporters are unlikely to stop looking at every available striker and wondering whether another body would be useful.
