There is always a lot going on during the first week of an NFL season. Every team thinks it has a chance, every offseason addition gets judged immediately, and every quarterback who struggled the year before gets another chance to change the conversation. That is where the NFL Week 1 pressure points come into play.
Some players have spent the entire offseason hearing about what they need to improve. Others are coming off injuries, entering new situations, or trying to prove last year’s success was not a fluke. They all have plenty of football ahead of them, but a good start could make things much easier.
Here are five players who enter Week 1 with plenty to prove.
C.J. Stroud Faces One of the Biggest NFL Week 1 Pressure Points
C.J. Stroud probably did not expect his contract situation to become part of the conversation heading into the season, but that is where things stand.
The Texans have until the start of the season to get a deal done, or they can push the negotiations into the offseason. That means Stroud has another reason to get off to a good start when Houston faces Buffalo.
His 2025 season was not disastrous, but it was not the kind of season that completely erased the questions that had started to surround him. He threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Now comes the opportunity to remind everyone why Houston drafted him second overall.
Stroud does not have to put together an MVP performance in Week 1. He just needs to look comfortable and in control. That would be a good start to what could become one of the biggest NFL Week 1 pressure points of the season.

Caleb Williams Faces Major NFL Week 1 Pressure Points
Caleb Williams has something this year that he did not have when he entered the league.
Expectations.
The Bears made the playoffs last season and won the NFC North. Ben Johnson is now running the offense, and Chicago has every reason to expect Williams to take another step forward.
That makes the opener against Carolina important.
Williams could never make a play that leaves everyone watching in disbelief. The problem has been putting everything together consistently. Chicago does not need him to be spectacular every Sunday. It needs him to be dependable.
If Williams comes out of Week 1 looking like a quarterback who is ready to lead a playoff team again, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Bears will disappear quickly.
If he struggles, those questions will come right back.
Bryce Young Brings Another Set of NFL Week 1 Pressure Points
Bryce Young’s situation is almost the opposite of Williams’.
A couple of years ago, Young was trying to prove he belonged. Now he is coming off a season in which Carolina won the NFC South and has a much more stable situation around him.
Then the schedule was handed to him; Williams in Week 1.
That makes this one of the more interesting NFL Week 1 pressure points. The quarterbacks were taken No. 1 overall in consecutive drafts, and both are still trying to establish themselves as the long-term answer for their teams.
Young does not need to win some imaginary competition with Williams. He just needs to play well.
A strong opening performance would give Carolina another reason to believe the progress Young showed last season is something it can build around.
Bo Nix Has One of Denver’s Biggest NFL Week 1 Pressure Points
The Broncos finally got over the hump and won the AFC West last season.
Now they have to do it again.
That puts Bo Nix in an interesting position. He is no longer the young quarterback trying to figure out whether he can lead Denver. He is the quarterback of a team that expects to be playing meaningful games late in the season.
Denver opens Monday night against Kansas City, which is about as good an early test as Nix could get.
This is one of those NFL Week 1 pressure points where the numbers may not tell the entire story. Nix does not have to throw five touchdowns. He needs to look like someone who can handle the responsibility that comes with being the quarterback of a division favorite.
A win would be an excellent way to start.

Joe Burrow’s Return Creates Another Set of NFL Week 1 Pressure Points
Joe Burrow probably seems like an odd choice for a list like this. He shouldn’t have to prove that he can play quarterback.
His problem is staying on the field and helping Cincinnati make something of the opportunities it has had during his career.
Burrow missed most of last season because of injury, so his return is naturally going to receive plenty of attention. The Bengals need their quarterback healthy, and they need him playing well if they are going to get back into the AFC playoff picture.
That makes Burrow one of the biggest NFL Week 1 pressure points.
Cincinnati cannot afford to spend another season waiting for everything to come together. It has too much talent and too little time to waste.
The Last Word
None of these players will have their seasons decided by what happens in Week 1. That is not how football works.
But the first game can set the tone. It can quiet the criticism, create a new question, or give a team confidence that carries into September.
That is why these NFL Week 1 pressure points are worth watching.
Stroud has to answer questions about his next contract. Williams has to show that Chicago’s breakthrough was not a one-year thing. Young has to continue proving that he has turned a corner. Nix has to show that Denver can remain on top of the division. Burrow has to get Cincinnati moving in the right direction.
The season is long. The pressure starts now.
