Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he had options to leave the club this summer after feeling "sad" about not receiving a contract extension like teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.
Mac Allister, 27, is under contract with Liverpool until the summer of 2028 after signing a five-year deal in 2023. The Argentine midfielder has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, but insists that he loves the club and its fans and has yet to force his way out.
Liverpool had a midfield-heavy transfer window in 2023, signing Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, and Mac Allister, though only two have received extensions. Szoboszlai and Gravenberch have committed their futures, but Mac Allister said the club informed him it wasn't in a position to offer him a similar deal.
Mac Allister has played in all three Premier League games under new head coach Andoni Iraola, and spoke to reporters ahead of Liverpool's first Champions League game of the season. Mac Allister was asked about his future, with less than two years remaining on his deal.
The midfielder had a busy summer with Argentina at the FIFA World Cup, but revealed that he could have left Liverpool. "There was a chance, of course, as everyone knows," Mac Allister said.
"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad because everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club every single day in training. I always give my best.
"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts because they deserve it, it makes me happy, but at the same time, it makes me sad because I didn't get mine. We went through a lot together. We won the Premier League together, and we went through difficult times together, but of course, [not being offered a contract] it makes me a little sad."

Mac Allister told Liverpool fans not to worry about his commitment, vowing to give everything until his final day at the club. The midfielder also refused to entertain any excuses for a lack of fitness this season, as his World Cup campaign ended on July 19.
"It's the same for almost every player right now," he said. "But it's good. I love playing football and love being here in terms of the guys, it's good, it's a good start to the season.
"The results haven't been the best, as at Liverpool you have to win every game, but I see a lot of improvement and positive things we have to keep doing. Tomorrow is going to be important."
Iraola was also asked about Mac Allister's situation, but believes that there is time to discuss an extension. The head coach has only just arrived at Liverpool, but values Mac Allister's role.

"We all have responsibilities, contracts with a club. We haven't been together a long time, but he is very important and has played a lot of minutes very highly. We have time to talk about those contract situations," Iraola said.
Iraola also believes he can further improve Mac Allister, hinting that an extension could be a priority. "I try to help all my players. I hope I can improve my players so I can help them win games," he added.
"Same with Alexis and everyone else. I'm very happy with Alexis and his performances, especially on Friday. I hope I can help him to improve. He's a very good player."
